Assemblage - Authors Notes and link to soundtrack and PDF
WOW, I cannot believe I finished and got it all posted! My longest fic. My first Big Bang. My first J2. I figure, if nothing else, this is an excellent way to de-lurk myself!
When I originally signed up for Big Bang, I had a completely different story drafted out and until about three weeks before the first draft deadline, that was the story I was gonna be posting. Well, it never got quite long enough to post, and was starting to turn into a research monster, in that I was constantly doing more background research because I never thought I had done enough (one word: Pirates. J2 pirates, and I was researching how to sail a boat, proper pirate lingo, history, mythology, yadda yadda yadda). The story is still in draft form and I may eventually write it. Who knows.
BUT then one day I thought this fic up, and I had to write it and here we are. I was watching a lot of Supernatural, Angel and Buffy while I wrote this, so that may explain the majority of this story. I wanted to write something a little bit Supernatural for our boys, and I hope I accomplished that. I didn't go to university in Texas, but I was a second year student in 2000, and I live in the Canadian equivalent of Texas (oil, cows and cowboys, yee haw!), but there are likely many, many differences between university here and university there. I tried to match the time of my fic with the actual age of the boys, and when they would have been in university as well. I tried to stay consistent with what would have been around in 2000, both technology and pop-culture wise. I know I slipped up with the one song (Fat Boy Slim's Weapon of Choice came out in 2001, was recorded in 2000), but otherwise I think I've stayed pretty true to form.
The soundtrack is simply music I was listening to while writing this, specifically to get myself into the mood for writing the bar/beer gardens scenes. I figured I would throw it up here for you guys to listen along if you so choose to do so. Enjoy!
I have to heap a huge amount of thanks on my beta readers. Mari Fee, my best friend in real life, gave this an amazingly thorough edit, even though slash is not really her cup of tea. I am hugely grateful for her time, support, patience listening to me whine, and all around guidance through the process. beckiee did a read through for character consistency and sexy-times-approval, and for that I am also immensely grateful. All mistakes that remain in the fic are entirely my own, since I am stubborn and didn't always listen to them.
