Last thursday I was at clinical at Cobough hospital and got the opportunity to help deliver a baby boy. The maternity unit is part of the surgical floor that Im on so when I heard that their was a mother in labour I asked if I could watch. My instructor said that it was ok and so did the doctor and the mother and father. The doctor then took me aside and showed me how to give O2 to a baby and set up the O2. It was going to be my job to bag the baby if needed and to provide oxygen for it. Then during the birth the doctor had me help him by guiding the baby's head out of mom. He also had me suction the baby once it was out to help it breath. The doctor then handed me baby and told me to go clean it off. Please note new born babies are VERY slippery. The nurses helped me and I then weighed him. 7lb 8 onces, a beautiful baby boy. The mom had some complications thought and was bleeding a lot. Her blood pressure dropped and her heart rate was up to 249 at one point. This was an awsome opportunity for me and I really enjoyed it. Not many 2nd years get to deliver a baby.
