Be yourself if you want to be me

Believe it or not, I made another post at Aesthetisexuality. I feel like a human RSS feed over here. This one is rather brief, and mostly a reflection upon meeting Peter Murphy last week. Yeah, that happened. Not only did it happen, but he lavished us with ego-exploding compliments.

In news completely unrelated to Aesthetisexuality, I started my summer class at SMC on monday. It's ancient western civ, so basically like the history class I took in ninth grade, but may actually hold my interest anyway. The funny thing is that the class is kind of a trainwreck, and I kind of like it. Well, every community college class I've taken has been a bit of a mess in one way or another, but this one may actually be an enjoyable mess. The professor has been consistently fifteen minutes late, which pisses people off but is fine by me, because it means that I appear on time when I am consistently five minutes late. She spends over half the class on tangents (living in India, living in Israel, the world is not ending in 2012, etc.) which also pisses people off because they feel it's a waste of time, but I've always enjoyed tangental teaching, as long as its amusing. I don't give a crap if it's not necessary. She is very blunt, moody, and snaps at people. Yet I can tell that I am not the kind of person she will snap at. She seems like someone I would be related to; not like one particular family member, but a combination of both of my grandmothers and my aunt (my dad's sister, who happens to be a college professor). I've learned that she has a terrible reputation amongst students for all the reasons I've just mentioned, and yet I've also realized over the years that I usually do really well with teachers that other people hate.

I wrote the following down in my notebook today because it amused me. One of many straggling students walked in late today asking if he could be added to the class. She harasses him a bit, eventually getting to asking why he didn't come to the first two classes.
"I was sick, and lost."
"Welcome to humanity."

Fucking brilliant.

What I suspect that most people don't appreciate is that in addition to everything above, she is adamantly open minded and interested in perspective over unified fact. This is the only way I can deal with history. Also, every SMC class I've taken has been entirely multiple-choice-test based, which on one hand is great because they have all been classes that fall into the GE-burden for me. On the other hand, it's a little pathetic. I assumed this would be the same, but she made it clear that she has never given a multiple choice test, and everything will be writing based. On one hand, I was disappointed because I won't just breeze through the class without thinking. On the other hand, well, the same thing. I think I'll be able to manage it just fine, but I will have to do actual work. I might not be thrilled, but it's fine, and frankly it gives me a little more faith in The System.
