Kame puts the spoon to his lips and tastes the sauce. Perfect. He smiles and then turns off the stove.

“Dinner is ready!” he calls out but doesn’t get any reply from his niece. He frowns.

“Little princess?” he calls out again but still no reply and so he walks out from the kitchen. The TV is on in the living room but she’s not there watching the newest Johnny’s group Y.E.S performing.

As he walks towards the guest room, he notices that the bathroom door is closed. He feels the handle. It is locked.

“Princess? Are you in there?” he knocks on the door and presses his ear against the wooden surface.

He gets a mumbling reply and worry washes over him.

“Princess, are you okay?” he asks, trying not to panic. She’s a teenager now and he knows how she can overreact on the tiniest things sometimes. “Please open the door and let me in?”

He hears movement inside the bathroom and then a click as she unlocks the door. He opens it and finds her sitting on the toilet seat. She doesn’t look very well.

“What is it?” Kame asks, kneeling down next to her and puts a fatherly hand on her knee.

“My stomach hurts,” she says, lower lip trembling a little. “And there’s blood.”

“Blood?” Kame repeats, and now he can’t hold back the panic in his voice.

She nods slowly

“Where are you bleeding? We should get you to the hospital.” Kame gets up from the floor and grabs her hand to pull her up.

“No!” she says, her voice firm and determined and Kame stops and stares at her.

“I mean…” she starts. “It’s nothing serious I mean. It’s just my…”

She stops talking and looks away from Kame. She seems embarrassed.

“It’s my first.” she continues, her voice now much lower.

Kame doesn’t get what she means at first but then everything falls into place. “Oh…” he says and now he feels a bit embarrassed too.

“Do you want me to go out and buy…?” Kame starts, not quite sure how to handle the situation. It would have been so much better if she had stayed over at his parents’ house together with her younger siblings. His mum would have known exactly how to handle this, but she had insisted on staying at Kame’s while her parents were away over the weekend.

Her head shoots up and her eyes are wide as plates. “No!” she then looks back down. “I can go buy it myself.”

“No, I won’t let you out on your own.” Kame says. “It’s too late and too dark and you’re only 13.”

“But-” she protests.

“No.” Kame cuts her off.

“I guess I’ll just bleed to death then!” she shrieks and runs out of the bathroom. A second later Kame hears the door to the guest room slam shut. He sighs and picks up his phone.

“Thank you so much.” Kame says and opens the front door to let Anne in. “You’re an angel.”

“You’re lucky I was home.” she smiles as she gets out of her coat and boots. “Where is she?”

“In the guest room.” Kame sighs. “She won’t talk to me.”

“She’ll come around.” Anne pats his shoulder and then moves towards the guest room. Kame doesn’t follow her. Instead, he walks into the kitchen to reheat the dinner.

Hours later, or so it feels to Kame, but it has really just been half an hour, Anne and his niece comes into the kitchen. Anne seems satisfied, as if she has accomplished something great. She kind of has, Kame admits.

His niece on the other hand looks embarrassed and keeps on looking down at the floor as she walks up to him.

“I’m sorry,” she mumbles and Kame smiles. He pulls her into a hug and she doesn’t resist.

“It’s okay” he replies and strokes her hair. He can‘t believe how quickly she‘s growing up. “You don’t need to apologize.”

He releases her and looks her in the eyes. “Let’s just have dinner now, ok? And we can have ice cream for dessert afterwards.”

She smiles and nods.

“You’re staying for dinner, right?” Kame turns to Anne who is leaning against the kitchen counter with a smirk on her face.

“Of course,” Anne replies and turns around to pick out a plate for herself from the cabinet.

Kame smiles.

The end.
