you are strongly advised not to read any further... pissed of stupid rambling is to follow...
--- VENT ON ---
it has been a pretty shitty past few weeks... i am completely overworked at school due to my ridiculous choice of taking nearly 30 credit hours AGAIN... but i would like to graduate someday... i am still working on my 2 bachelors degrees in chinese and japanese... in which i have all of my major classes done but am just now dallying along through the fucking waste-of-time GECs... as I love nothing more than sitting in class w/ a bunch of freshman who seem so lost in a class that u can pass with even a tiny bit of common sense.. im also working on a masters degree right now in advanced chinese language and culture through OSU flagship program (all my classmates are funded by the government, on the premise that when they graduate they will work for NSA/DOD/CIA/FBI/etc. when they get out).. we are overworked to hell, and pushed hard... this is basically a chinese bootcamp, except the directors here have a lovely concept that we dont need to focus much on language, but rather understanding chinese culture... therefore, all the classes we have are taught completely in chinese and use chinese textbooks/teaching materials.. and any language issues we have should be investegated ourselves... this quarter our classes are negotiating in chinese culture, language in china, and an optional reading class (which has 3 students now and i would have NEVER took if i knew it wasnt required)... next quarter will feature a media class and a history class taught with bei da's textbook...the one made for Chinese students studying history.. that should be a treat
shit that has pissed me the fuck off recently:
#1) last week one of my teachers (who has been in US for a few years now)... asked me if i could help out one of the professors that was rented out from hunan to come teach class for this quarter.. she bought a laptop.. had it for a week... and then decided that she wanted to take it back because it wasnt good enough and she would be back in china by the time the rebate was mailed to her.. my teacher asked me to go meet with her and help her out... including driving her to wherever the damn store she bought it from was on a saturday and helping her get a new one... i asked why she couldnt just have the rebate sent to someone here in columbus and then let that person send it to her in china... teacher said she wouldnt trust them or something... so i go to her office after class last friday... sit there talking to her husband for an hour (one of our other teachers) before he finally decides to call his wife to come back to the office... then she comes back and shows me the laptop.. its a really nice new sony vaio... she says that she wants to take it back because all her friends said she should buy an ibm... i told her ibm just usually means a computer that uses windows and isnt a mac.. and the laptop she had was fine and didnt need to be returned... she showed me some printouts of different computers and was trying to compare them just based on their brand name alone... as she probably had no idea what any of those components listed below actually meant... after talking w/ her for another 20 mintues i finally convinced her that she didnt need to take it back, and told her to call me if she ever has any problems and needs my help (i really HOPE this never happens)... she then continued to waste my time small talking w/ me for next hour or so.. and i finally had to start dropping the cues that "i want out of here"
#2) just got email a few minutes ago... our program director / department head met with some foreign docotors (cardiologists and neuroscientists) visisting here for 3-4 months from bj and sh... the doctors want english tutors.. the email and the burdon was forwarded onto the poor 7 or so of us in the program.. as a part of getting this degree is supposed to involve doing community service for the chinese community here in ohio, (almost all of which is bitch work that has nothing to do with our chinese skills)
#3) every chinese class/teacher thinks it is a great idea for us to write a paper once a week about what goes on in their class and such... except im in 3 chinese classes.. 75% of them i have not done... nor do i plan on doing
#4) both the fucking gidions and the jesus freaks have been out this week (jesus freaks being the fucking lunatics with huge jesus signs in the middle of the oval screaming to students as they walk by about the recent hurricanes and the coming of the appocalypse and how we are all sinners etc.) if these people were wiped off the face of the earth i would not shed a tear
#5) happened today... REALLY INFURIATED ME... chinese 751.. readings in chinese scholarly text... teacher = rented from hunan... (same teacher as computer rant above).. she was brought here for the sole purpose of teaching us 3 students this class for this quarter.. i think she teaches at Bei Yu most of the time, so therefore has experience w/ foreigners... after watching a video of some 2002 national college debate contest finals on tuesday (in which the participants were all clearly robots)... we were supposed to start todays class of with a debate about 孝 (filial piety).. i dont 'prepare' for debates so i walked in with nothing.. but my classmates had obviously put some effort in and had notes down ready to go.. the topic was "孝是中国传统美德还是封建糟粕" (rough translation: does filial piety represent china's traditional virtue/morality or crap left over from feuadlism) -- i was obviously going to argue for the latter.. so we started out.. each talked about our viewpoint for 3 minutes or so... after my classmates both presented their views (filial piety = good), i presented my viewpoint of filial piety being crap.. and my teacher proceeded to say "maybe jared doesnt really feel that way, but he just wants to play that role for the debate"... u fucking wish... after we each spoke for a couple minutes.. we were about to start the back-and-forth debating part.. my classmate asked me a question... i answered it... and then it happened... 90 seconds into our debate.. the teacher cut in and started to voice her opinion... she finished speaking 70 minutes later... eventually getting totally off track and talking about shit that had absoooolutely nothing to do with filial piety... at the end of hurt fucktastic speech... she said we could take a 5 minute break and then come back and start reading next chapter about raising old people... the debate was over... there is no way this chinese teacher could open up her mind and think for herself.. she is programmed and brainwashed like the rest... she does not have the freedom of free thought... i decided not to even try and talk to her.. as she would not hear... all she needs to do is spit out responses that have been memorized out of books.. or if worst comes to worst pull the string "you are not chinese there is no way you could understand"... any foreigner who has dared to say more than "qingdao is pretty", "i like chinese food", "chinas history is so long!" and actually voiced there opinion to a chinese person definitely knows what i am talking about
i have begun to realize a few things over the past couple of months...
chinese people have no creativity... everything they make and produce is copied from other people... and im not just talking about the bootleg dvds...
chinese people cannot think for themselves.. theyve been programmed since young with morals just like this fucking 孝 or filial piety that completely fuck them up... they dont dare question those above them... they do not ask "why?"... they just blindly follow what mommy and daddy tells them
chinese people worship the past WAY TOO FUCKING MUCH... your god damn fucking right this country has 5000 years of history... thats something to be so proud of! EXCEPT YOU SHOULD ALL BE GOING AROUND IN LITTLE FUCKING FLYING CARS BY NOW or at leave have made some contribution to the world other than $0.25 labor..
chinese people are all at various levels of being "book smart"... which is probably due to their emphasis on a few tests determining their future, etc. it seems like everything chinese people know they memorize word for word from most-likely government-written or highly biased books... emphasizing the fact that they do not think for themselves...
thats all i really feel like writing right now... i just needed my monthly vent
