Accelerating Anticipation

Somewhere amongst the messages, you felt that your words were feeble
You believe your misuse of punctuation traps your intention
But those fibers of your iris, they are charged with electricity
And you pattern waves with your movements, you transmit sound
I can feel my cells responding to you, gathering in a panic like a swarmed crowd for an exit
anything to be on the other side of your touch

It could have very well been Summer, that Winter night in your doorway
toying with sections of an orange between our teeth
peeling the rinds off to tear away more seconds
You were staring me down like a spaghetti western
I was beckoning your trigger pull, I had my eyebrows up
And the heat was a Savannah June, you could have suspended me in atmosphere of that kitchen
Hooked on you and your silence, the motion of your mouth biting down

We racketed our emotions back and forth in the living room
Some tenuous badminton game with our commitments the birdie
As each statement returned,
we'd swill spirits through our teeth and my tears would evaporate to smoke as I bit back thoughts of rooms without you.

Try again on seats of charcoal wool, my legs around you like children on a swing set
My tangled past, now smoothed. My body only a tangle around you. Perfectly slipped string like sailors knots
We have become tied, entranced
Words again, sweetly as before but understood succinctly
I said the meanings, my feelings, but I had only to open myself to you, let you thumb through my pages
My skin an archive, and you're translating a prediction

And every moment, chain reaction suspended
Time delay between an explosion
All that energy, powerfully tucked between our fingers
I can feel it in the spaces between my tendons as I twist my hands through your hair
You had apologetic eyes as we traversed the city on the bus
A cross-section of population rattling the inside of that vessel, and then us
Magnetically honed in to one another, you watching me tell you how I want you
And me reading the innocence of your stare
Your eyes were summoning me like an encouraging finger, curling up to invite me in

There are only those glances in my memory, my thoughts have swollen up around you like gauze
And now, when I am alone on those orange plastic seats, I see your face
I see the way your tongue licks my lips, and I can sense your palm on my back
My hips tilt to accommodate the dream, and every single kiss you have ever given me to say goodbye is resting in my mouth
Currency for our next hello.
