I have been working on my Mummy trilogy compilation (I've already posted the artwork in my cover gallery). Because I was as familiar as I was with the first two scores, all it really took was a viewing of the new movie to get an idea of how the music works in the film to come up with a structure for the album. The hard part was matching the dynamics, because each of these score have completely different sonics (Goldsmith's is decently dynamic but not loud enough, Silvestri's is too dynamic and Edelman's is just all loud, even the quiet parts), making it very difficult to get the sound levels to match. I have been listening to my master and aside from a few very minor tweaks required, it is just about complete. I'll have the entry for it posted shortly.
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor in a nutshell:
- The change of locale does inject a little bit of freshness into the mix.
- Brendan Fraser is as amiable as ever.
- Most of the plot twists are telegraphed at least ten minutes in advance (par for the course for a Mummy feature), although there are one or two nifty turns.
- Maria Bello gives it her best, but something is lost in the translation from Rachel Weisz.
- Most of the special effects are nothing short of dazzling.
- Luke Ford's turn as Alex (played by Freddie Boath in The Mummy Returns) isn't the albatross that it might have been.
- Three-headed dragons never get old.
- Randy Edelman's score is decent - and certainly works better on film than on the completely mixed-up album - but the fuller orchestration on John Debney's cues stand out.
- Jet Li kicks ass and Isabella Leong is extremely easy on the eyes.
