The new entry can be found here.

I will make no bones about the fact that my interest in Star Trek had as much to do with my fascination with film music as Star Wars did. While Williams' music was omnipresent and almost axiomatic as the voice of Star Wars to me, the fact that there were so many different composers ( Read more... )

Well, as I said in the entry:

I think Eidelman's score is a real classy affair. He built his score around short leitmotives instead of long-form themes, and when it kicks in it is a kaleidescope of orchestral color. I think it is a shame that Eidelman wasn't able to parlay his Star Trek experience into a blockbuster career as Horner was.

I really like Eidelman's score. The darker nature of the film meant that the music had to be harsher, and he managed to accomplish that while staying true to the established sound of the series. I like how he keeps that main theme in check, only presenting it in heroic mode over the end credits.

I thought the intro and outro tracks on the disc are as good as Star Trek gets but a lot of the score leaves me feeling kind of hollow in the end. The same goes for Generations which has a stunning overture - and the rest of the score is pretty dull.

I was bored by Generations for the most part (score and film).

My initial reaction to Undiscovered Country was similar to yours, but then I started returned to the score and found it a lot more interesting. It is a very action-specific score, but as it is so much more low-key than Wrath of Khan, it needs more time to work as a stand-alone experience.

As your teacher Mister Spock is fond of saying, I like to think that there are always possibilities.
