Battle of the Bands on Thursday and the GYGL fundraiser are getting closer. I've wanted to be in a band since watching some britpop group on Tops of the Pops and seeing that someone in the band was wearing glasses and looked like a bit of a geek, which made me think "even I can be cool if he's cool!" (I now think it might have been Jarvis Cocker playing in Pulp, but there's no way I'll ever know for sure). There's just something so cool about being able to play with others (even if we're, ahem, not the tightest unit in the world) and play our own songs. And also share my feelings with the world. There's an All Music Guide article on riot grrrl that points out the music was as cathartic as it was political, and the shouty/angry parts of our music (i.e. most of it) are certainly like that for me.
On a related note, I've also always wanted to play Battle of the Bands at Warwick, because I love that competition to pieces on so many levels. I think when I accepted the invitation to judge a couple of years back I'd decided that I never would play it after all. I don't expect us to do well, but that's not the point.
Even better: Kirsty, Snowy and I just gel. It's utterly awesome.
Bring on the rock!
