Researching the Earth's magnetic fields tonight..think since global warming that creatures such as birds, fish, whales and butterflies are off course....anyway...off to work.. :)
Climate changes of greenhouse effects also effect humans as well as all life forms...The trees, flowers are blooming earlier, animals breeding earlier which causes decline in their babies survival during months that revert back and forth...Japan sets standard for temperature to 82 on all thermostats..wondered how they have not progressed in solar..seems as if they are usually ahead of the times...
but now back to migration..
Birds according to some scientist see the earth's magnetic field.
I have been studying this for some time now in another fan fiction story I am writing on birds.
Scientists are digging deeper into cellular navigation tools that guide birds in their patterns of migrations.
I read about superoxide, an oxygen molecule that the think combines with light-sensitive proteins to form an 'in-eye compass" so the theory is that the birds actually are able to see either colored light, shades of gray and white or perhaps dots on the horizon that they use to guide themselve.
“It connects from the subatomic world to a whole bird flying,” said Michael Edidin, an editor of Biphysical Journal.
The superoxide theory was invented by Biophysicist Klaus Schulten of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is the lead author of the study and a pioneer in avian magnetoreception. Schulten first hypothesized in 1978 that some sort of biochemical reaction took place in birds’ eyes, most likely producing electrons whose spin was affected by subtle magnetic gradients.
By 2000 Schulten suggested that a photoreceptor protein called cryptochrome is the compass. He said it reacts with a certain unknown molecule" to produce pairs of electrons that exist in a state of quantum entanglement - spatially separated, but each still able to affect the other."
Their theory : "According to this model, when a photon hits the compass, entangled electrons are scattered to different parts of the molecule. Variations in Earth’s magnetic field cause them to spin in different ways, each of which leaves the compass in a slightly different chemical state. The state alters the flow of cellular signals through a bird’s visual pathways, ultimately resulting in a perception of magnetism."
This had spurned technology to implement entangled electrons to store information in quantum computers.
The other key element is unknown. Some think that oxygen could interact with cryptochrome to produce the strange electron entanglements/
All of this is still being researched but is very interesting to me.
So imagine now the birds cannot see the colors, or the shades or the dots. They go off course, they do not migrate in the warm targeted area.

On global warming I found this article from Science.gc.ca Bird Migrations
Rob Butler
This is the critical piece of migration. When we added all the pieces up, without the wind our calculations indicate that the birds would run out of fuel. The wind gives them that little assistance and pushes them along and gets them to the next stopover site. What we think they're actually doing is using the wind as the... just like a surfer would use it.

Now Butler is looking to see whether rising carbon dioxide levels, the culprit in global warming, may change wind direction and speed. Climatologist Bill Taylor took data from past years and projected what would happen to circulation patterns as more heat was trapped in the atmosphere.
Bill Taylor
What our wind data indicates is two things. It gives us an idea, a measurement of the speed and the direction of the wind. And depending on weather conditions, the wind typically is either out of the south or southwest or it's out of the northwest. Those are the two fairly common regimes that we see in the Gulf. So when we look at these, do an analysis of these winds, there are areas that are going to be, that will be more favourable to bird migration...

The blue areas represent regions where wind direction could help push the birds along quickly, adding an extra one or two metres per second to their flying speed. The smaller orange area represents a headwind, which could slow them down.
Bill Taylor
As the winds shift, you know, it will affect the birds as well in how successful they are at migrating. The really interesting question will be whether the species can come through and survive this.
So long distance birds would be effected the most. They rely on the navigational tools to take them to warmer areas to live and breed. If off course they would land on areas that could be barren with little food source, areas with predators, or areas with severe weather they may not be able to withstand...
If one dies it is really many..for that one bird never made it to its nesting ground to mate and to raise its young...after a few years this could impact one bird population into extinction.
Read about just birds falling from the sky articles
I mean they are exhausted, no food, winds change forcing them to fly and use all their strength, they are lost... they cannot continue..oh I want to cry...
and read...
It doesn't effect just birds..I read all over the world whale's beached onshore and dying from pulmonary collapse..
read..read...learn..learn....we may be able to help them from man's reckless waste.....seems so sci fy to think of man manipulating the sky or placing helmets on a birds head...see that was my story...See Tesla I think was first fascinated by a birds endearment then next their scientifically puzzling side..I mean carrier pigeons have been used forever to transport notes...in war times read the story I wrote in honor of Cher Ami who was pigeon who got a distinguished medal of honor...you cans see him at the Smithsonian... Pigeons...they navigate so well....well they used to....
well I am off work today...sat out on my porch..out of bird food in the feeder and need to refill it...saw a Robin and two starlings eating in the lawn...Watch the robins migration in flocks.. it is amazing. and join( ebird at cornell university free onine.... great site..)
The robins ate an entire Holly tree in seconds..so hungry..I wondered where they were all heading to...They are in the picture I posted on one of my trees in the backyard...ever see birds on their journey in the sky? A v pattern of geese perhaps? They are so brave...anyway...
Heading out to enjoy the day and admire them and help them in some small way..if only a bit of food and water and a bit of shelter and a bit of a lawn and flowers...it is all I know now to do... :)
