It was a Tuesday morning at ten o'clock and Abigail was well under way in her daily ritual. She watched the KUSI News Team at seven if only for Ross Becker, then watched whatever showcase was on HSN, today it was the wonder of sleep wear with rhinestones. The Floridian hosts were oohing and ahing at every sparkle and every stretch of the glorified sweat pants with two easy payments of $17.30. Even though she owned nearly six hundred channels from MegaDish, she found that at ten a.m. her heart belonged to The Price is Right. The transition from Bob Barker to Drew Carrey didn't offend her in the slightest. Abigail welcomed the change and appreciated the hour with her personal funny man.
"Aaand now for our next contestant…" the announcer announced and Abigail tensed up. She suddenly felt nervousness mixed with a christmas morning type excitement. She was sitting eyes closed on her HSN ordered corduroy love seat and in her mind she was saying pick me, please, please pick me.
"Abigail, come on dowwwwwwn," was announced and Abigail jumped up right out of her chair. The whole crowd was cheering for her as she ran down the aisle at full speed not even letting her three hundred and sixty pound body get in her way. And there she was with all the other contestants, the marine, the college student, the dumb girl, and Abigail at the green station.
The first item that they were bidding on was "a brand new seventy inch flat screen TV" and the crowd went wild as the "Applause" sign flashed. Abigail clapped and had a huge double-chinned grin on her face, she wanted that flat screen. The college student went first and he said four thousand. The dumb girl went second and said "one dollar Drew," and Abigail rolled her eyes. Next was the Marine that firmly replied "Twenty-five hundred."
"You're next Abigail," Drew said smiling, "What do you wager?"
Abigail handled it like a pro. She didn't turn around to ask the audience, nor did she ask what the others had wagered. "Drew, two thousand, seven hundred and twenty-nine."
A double beep was heard throughout the auditorium as someone had gotten the exact price of the seventy inch.
"Now isn't this exciting?" Drew said with a smile and with his index finger he pushed back his black trimmed glasses, " Someone is getting a $500 bonus for guessing the correct amount." All the contestants were giddy thinking that they were the ones that guessed the right price.
"And the winner of seventy inch television and the bonus of five hundred dollars goes to, Abigail."
Abigail cheered and ran her way upstage. She was wearing grey rhinestone studded sweatpants and a Stone Temple Pilots t-shirt. Abigail approached Drew with a hug and he returned it along with a kiss on her cheek. At this moment, every dream was realized. As Drew was standing on stage holding onto Abigail's hand he showed her and the audience her next prize, which was "A brand new car!"
Abigail had never had a brand new car or her own car, for that matter. When she was a teenager she would borrow her mom's car, a beat-up Fairmont that had lost its passenger side mirror from when Abigail's mother came home drunk one night. Abigail hadn't spoken to her mother Lucy in seven years after her thirtieth birthday. As a birthday gift, Lucy had made a downpayment for gastric bypass for an insuranceless Abigail.
