(OOC: Hopefully it won't delete half of it this time...)

8. “Hopeless emptiness. Now you've said it. Plenty of people are onto the emptiness, but it takes real guts to see the hopelessness.”
| Revolutionary Road

After a while Meera starts to notice things about Juni, she’ll readily admit to not being the most observant person but she can still see facts, and since she seems to be the only one who can see anything bad in Miss Perfect she has to notice them.

Juni is acting, she’s a good performer but sometimes she slips, sometimes the gentle smile and the sparkling goodwill slip into a disgusted sneer, sometimes those pretty pink eyes narrow and glare… Mostly at Meera (and she supposes she can understand that, given that she sends Juni the same sort of looks often) but sometimes she glares at Dervish and Bill-E… And once Meera even caught her looking in the mirror with that face, all that loathing directed straight back at herself.

Sometimes the act slips into something other than loathing though, sometimes Meera will come across her standing in the hall of portraits and looking incredibly sad, once she managed to edge close enough to see what Juni was looking at and saw the portrait of a fairly ordinary teenage girl, surely nothing to be sad about?

Another thing it can slip into is pain, this one is less common but just as puzzling… Twice Meera has come across Juni curled into a corner and clutching her head, twice Juni has muttered nonsense at her and then has yelled, While still clutching her head…

These are all puzzling but hardly scary, being a disciple exposes a person to a whole range of human emotions, in fact it is almost a relief that her suspicions aren’t just the results of jealousy… There is something scary though, she’s seen it a few times in Juni’s eyes.

Occasionally the woman just goes… Blank, like she has no proper emotions of her own, you just look into her eyes and a abyss stares back at you, almost as if she’s lost herself behind the acting, almost as if she doesn’t quite know who she’s supposed to be… Almost as if she’s lost all hope.

Meera has been a disciple for almost twenty years, but the occasional blankness in Juni’s stare scares her more than any demon.

--

One day Meera gives Juni a lift back from her job, Dervish has taken Bill-E off for some family time and since she’ll still do anything for Dervish giving his girlfriend a lift back was the least that she could do.

When they get back to the house Meera doesn’t look back at first, instead just hopping off the bike and taking her helmet off “there we are, home sweet home.”

…And then she glances back, back into the blank look on Juni’s face again, and if she thought it was terrifying from a distance it is nothing compared to right up close.

“Who are you?” she asks softly, the words rising to her lips without permission “who are you really?”

For a moment she expects Juni to deny everything, to go back to the act… But then Juni laughs bitterly and shakes her head “You know what, Meera? I don’t know anymore, I really don’t.”

Somehow Meera knows that she’s telling the truth.
