Job Interview Numero Uno

Sep 27, 2007 14:29

This is officially the first time I have ever been called in to interview for a writing-related position.

Today I drove down to Bellevue to interview at NuWire Investor Magazine. Currently, they are housed within the offices of Guidant Financial Group, but are apparently moving this weekend to their own quarters over the Precision Collision building. The guy who interviewed me was the head of the company, and was cracking jokes about the neon lights and things around the new building they're heading to. However, as he put it, being an online magazine, they don't need a particularly flashy office... and this way they can put their money into more important things, like beanbag chairs for the writers. I could definitely deal with that.

Needless to say... I'm not exactly what most people would term financially-minded. However, it appears that this is not much of an issue, as he said most of the writers aren't. That put my mind at ease a bit, though the idea of me writing articles about investing in real estate and whatnot is still a wee bit amusing.

He seemed like a really friendly, down-to-earth guy, and he asked me to come in again next Wednesday to meet with the head writer/editor, so I assume I at least didn't totally bomb the interview.

I always hate it when potential employers ask things like "So, what would you like to be doing in 10 years? What's your goal?" Because my goals never have anything whatsoever to do with their company. Fortunately, though this guy did ask that, he followed it with, "And I'm not asking because I want you to say 'I hope I'm a financial journalist forever!' because, c'mon, I know that's not true."

So we'll see how the second round of interviewing goes next week! I've also heading in to the Seattle Children's Theatre early in the week about possibly being their House Manager, so we'll see how things go. With any luck, I'll find an interesting job yet!
