Opposites (204 words)
Lanie watched Kate and Richard Castle walk out of the room. Kate had never really been all that disturbed by the morgue and Mr. Castle didn’t seem too phased by it either. That was where the similarity between the two ended.
Detective Kate Beckett was the consummate professional. She was serious, forthright and all business. Richard Castle, on the other hand, seemed to act more like a kid at an amusement park. It’s not that he was disrespectful to the dead, Lanie would have never allowed that, but he was utterly gleeful at the thought of unraveling this mystery.
Lanie had seen cops like that, they often burned out if not paired with the right partner. One who could offer balance and pragmatism. One who could offer rationalizations when the case remained unsolved - as they did from time to time.
Although, the grounded types had their troubles, too. Cops like Kate were determined and thorough, but sometimes the cynicism ate away at them. There was more than one way to burn out.
Lanie smiled. It seemed that Kate had found herself quite the unorthodox partner. She was glad that he was much her opposite. It would keep Kate from getting too jaded and cynical.

Stars (224 words)
Her dirty little secret? Lanie Parrish had come to New York City with stars in her eyes. No, she hadn’t come to study acting or to be a model or get into show business. She had always wanted to go into forensics. But she adored New York City. She loved the bustle of the city, the crowds around Times Square and she could not get enough of Broadway.
Almost every weekend, you could find her snatching up one of the cheap matinee tickets for a show. She usually didn’t bother to count, but she’d seen Wicked at least forty-three times.
She also loved the idea of running into celebrities while she walked around 5th Avenue. Not only actors and models, but authors and artists. She would often sit in one of the Starbucks, just to see who she would see shopping.
She never spoke to any of the celebrities, she didn’t ask for autographs or snap pictures with her camera. She thought that was too much of an invasion of privacy. Besides, her star-searching was a secret. One she could plausibly deny if anyone ever suspected because she was merely enjoying a show or a cup of coffee. She’d be rather embarrassed if her colleagues in the department discovered she was just a fangirl at heart.

Cold (220 words)
Lanie wasn’t one to suffer much from the cold. She liked the onset of chilly weather and loved the way Central Park looked when the leaves began to change. She was also partial to her fall wardrobe, full of deep reds, bright oranges and other earth tones. In fact, today she had worn a pair of her favorite chocolate colored pumps for the first time this season. She offset them with a pair of linen trousers that were a dusty shade of wheat and a silk blouse.
She reached into the van and took out her ME kit, some extra gloves and her clipboard. She shivered slightly as a gust of wind blew through the alleyway and decided to reach in for a jacket.
She looked down at the navy blue windbreaker with the cheap snaps and sighed. The windbreaker said ‘CORONER’ in large white block letters on the back and was utterly devoid of any sort of fashion sense. She always distrusted those who wore navy blue and brown together. But if she was going to have to do an in situ exam in a meat locker, she needed the extra layer.
Later, she was irritated that no one seemed to notice the fashion faux pax. Well, Kate looked at her askance, but knew better than to say anything.

Revenge (219 words)
Lanie picked up the remnants left on the autopsy table with a look of disgust on her face. Dr. Perlmutter continued to eat sandwiches in the lab and not in the break room down the hall. She hated how the sandwich wrappings and crumbs made such a mess of things. Even when he didn’t forget to clean things up, she could still find evidence that he’d eaten there. She could ALWAYS find the evidence.
Tossing the sandwich bag and napkins into the biohazard bin, she retrieved a bottle of cleaning solution from the cabinet and began wiping down the exam table. She thought of ways once again to try and keep him from his blasphemous practice. Nothing she had tried so far had worked. Sweetness hadn’t worked. Threats hadn’t worked. She refused to actually contaminate the place, it was unethical, but she was almost at wit’s end.
As she put away the cleaning supplies, she began to catch up on the cases he had worked during his shift. That’s when she saw his note.
“Since when is it in our job descriptions to outline official findings to hackneyed writers with big egos? Please tell me this is a joke.”
Lanie smiled as thoughts of revenge danced through her mind. How many of Kate’s cases could she send Perlmutter’s way?

No prompt (189 words)
It was her eighth straight day of taking a double shift. The ME’s office hadn’t felt this busy since that subway accident a few years ago that had left body bags with tags sitting in the hallways for a couple of days. Lanie finished closing up the large Y-incision on her latest patient, stretched her shoulders back and peeled off her examination gloves.
Walking towards her office, she nodded to one of the night assistants. “You can go ahead and pack him back up. Thanks, Jimmy.”
She was going to finish paperwork and then head onto the next autopsy when her stomach growled in protest. She contemplated investigating the vending machine when Detective Kate Beckett strolled in, carrying a brown paper bag with grease spots and a cup of coffee that came from somewhere outside the building.
“Is that from Vito’s? If that’s from Vito’s I will consider signing over my first born child.”
Kate smiled and nodded her head. “Meet you in the break room in five minutes?”
“Your timing is impeccable. How do you know when to do that?”
“I’m a detective. I’m supposed to know.”
