Tutorials for "washed-out" look

This is very fascinating! I'm only just learning how to use textures in icons and graphic-making, and the tutorials I usually read are quite complicated, involving lots of color and blending adjustments that are intimidating to noobs like me who aren't all that confident with the tools yet. But I totally followed everything you said, and you created beautiful icons.
