For those of you not privy to my locked posts, Elena broke up with me last Friday. This deserves more explanation, but because I've already talked about it in the friends section, you won't really get it here. If you want to know more, talk to me. In short, though, I was really optimistic about her and our long term prospects, and I'm not as happy as I could be if this hadn't happened, but I'm doing about as well as could reasonably be expected since it did.

Dealing with this is made considerably easier by the fact that everything else in my life is going so well and smoothly. Insurance is very promising, though I'm still waiting for my license to come in the mail. I'm told that in NH or ME you request the license online (once you've passed the test), it's all automated, and you have it within a couple days. In MA, though, you have to mail in the request, and after more than 2 weeks it still hasn't come back. I went out with my boss most of the day Tuesday this week, though. It was a good chance to get to know him a little bit, and to see how the business works by seeing several of his appointments and watching him make sales. Even gave me some confidence, because I looked at what he did and thought "I can do that." Which I think is a lot of the point -- a salesman has to be confident, really, to do well. The difficult part is really just making enough appointments to support yourself, not selling the insurance once you've found people interested enough to schedule a meeting with you to learn about it.

Choir is really going wonderfully. Not only has it been paying all my bills while I wait for everything to get started in the insurance business, but I think it has been really good for me musically, and it's a lot of fun. I don't know if people who aren't as obsessed with music as me have these, but I've had a number of musical swooning moments, where I was just like...wow, that piece is really amazing. The sort of musical feeling that just makes the rest of the world disappear for a moment so you can be wrapped in the aural sensation, which isn't really quite confined to the ears. On that note, I highly recommend to anyone who appreciates early choral music Byrd's Lamentations.

I also discovered tonight a new artist in a completely different genre that I discovered tonight and immediately purchased an album. Okay, so I heard him on WERS ages ago and made a note to look him up but hadn't for a while. In any case, Brett Dennen writes/sings/plays great music, which has a great beat, fun melodies, and even a social conscience reflected in the lyrics. I highly recommend stopping by to give some of it a free listen.

The band is really coming along, too. Demo disk is almost finished, and the biggest question mark is our name. Apparently lots of you like the name "Disambiguation" (thanks, Paul), and I agree, but it might be a bit too nerdy for the rest of my band, so I'm not sure they'll think much of it. Anyway, I suppose a name like Leeds or Poplars isn't bad either, and will still work if the music is good enough.

I have a good deal of found money coming my way within the next week or so, courtesy of PetCo. Sort of unexpected, as I haven't worked for them for a year and a half. Anyway, when I left, I didn't pick up a paycheck on my last day, so I sort of knew there had to be a few days to a week of pay I never got. For a short time after, I figured I should stop by and get it, but then summer ended and I returned to Williams and forgot all about it. Until last week checks arrived in my mailbox for a month and a half of back pay from PetCo. I still can't quite believe there was that much pay I never picked up, but hey, don't look a gift horse in the mouth. They were still dated in 2007 and marked "void after 6 months", but after talking with someone in Human Resources they've been more officially voided and replacement checks are on their way to me. Although I'm not worried about money in the long-term, things have been pretty tight on that front since Apple -- I had just about cleared out my account right before that happened to pay for my computer, in expectation of continued flow in, and while the choir pays enough to get by, there wasn't much to spare. Between that, and a lot of front-loaded costs for insurance (licensing fees, etc.) I've run up a bit of credit card debt that will, thankfully, be more than covered by those back paychecks.

I even met someone new today, on a semi-date-ish-thing at Panera. Her name is Anne. She's interesting and funny, a math teacher, and I'm probably taking her to her first contradance on Thursday. I don't really think it's a likely relationship or anything, and certainly not so immediately after Elena, but there's potential for a very good friendship.

Also, thanks very much to everyone who reached out to me when I first posted about Elena. I appreciate it a lot, and will probably see you soon. Little things often make more difference than you realize. :-)

Goodnight!

choir, relationships, elena
