My trip to the public library

I decide to go to the public library to renew my card and check out some books that I wanted to buy on Amazon.com, but I decided to see if the library had them first and read them that way. Just so I am not wasting money on books I might not enjoy. It turns out my card had been expired since 2000. I had a small fee of 3.00 to pay, which they took off and only charged me $1.50 to renew my card. I checked out a book and decided to use the phone to call my mom and ask her what she wanted me to get for dinner.

She says to me, "Where did you go."
Me: "The library."
Mom: "What the fuck are you doing at the library? You didn't tell me where you were going?"
Me: "Ummm... What do people normally do when they go to the library?"
Mom: ". . . . read books, go on the computer, study for papers. . . ."
Me: "Well, now you know."
Mom: "Smart-ass....."

She proceeds to berrate me on why I didn't tell her where I was going, what to have for dinner and so on. I was laughing at her on the phone by the end of the conversation. What do people normally do when they go to the library.... sheesh!

The book I checked out, Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey, as me stumped on this word. I'm already a few chapters into the 700 page novel. My other book put aside for the time being, Beauty: A retelling of Beauty and the Beast just wasn't holding my interest at the moment.

There is a word in the book I can't figure out that has my curiosity. If anyone knows what anguissette means please let me know. It sounds French.
