of leader qualities and all that
It takes Kyungsoo about five minutes to figure out that staying at home with Junmyeon is a really, really bad idea.
First of all, Junmyeon is always running around looking for someone to take care of, and while Kyungsoo appreciates Junmyeon’s efforts, it’s rather difficult for one to watch a movie when someone is constantly asking if the heater needs to be turned on, or if the air conditioner needs to be turned off.
Second of all, for some strange reason, Junmyeon can’t stand being more than two rooms away from Kyungsoo, so Kyungsoo finds himself constantly being followed by a worried Junmyeon who won’t stop yelling out randomly that Kyungsoo needs to drink water if he’s thirsty, or eat something if he’s hungry. Yes, Kyungsoo understands that Junmyeon is the leader of the group, and therefore has a reason and responsibility to take care of the other members, but seriously, it’s just the two of them alone in the dorm and Kyungsoo is perfectly capable of taking care of himself.
“I can cook dinner,” Kyungsoo says hastily when dinner time comes and Junmyeon literally runs to the kitchen. “Don’t trouble yourself with it.”
“But I want to make dinner,” Junmyeon retorts stubbornly, giving Kyungsoo a glare as he holds out a ladle threateningly. “Stay out of the kitchen.”
Kyungsoo isn’t sure whether he should laugh or be concerned about Junmyeon’s mental state, so he shrinks away and lets Junmyeon make dinner. When Junmyeon finishes, the two of them sit across from each other, each with a plate in front of him heaped with food.
Kyungsoo notices that Junmyeon has made his favorite meal, even though Junmyeon never makes it because he always complains that it’s too hard and it takes too much effort to make. It’s quite strange-actually, Junmyeon has been acting strange the entire day.
Kyungsoo frowns and looks at Junmyeon questioningly. “What’s with you today? You’re being even more nice than usual.”
“Nothing’s wrong,” Junmyeon says nonchalantly, picking up his chopsticks. “Is there a problem with being nice?”
Kyungsoo snorts and tries to choke back his laughter. “Funny. You usually leave the cooking to me. And you don’t follow people around half as much as you did today.”
“So?”
“So, I’m asking if there’s anything wrong.”
“Why are you automatically assuming the negative?”
Kyungsoo sighs and shakes his head. “Never mind. Let’s just eat.”
They’re silent for a few more minutes, before Junmyeon says quietly, “I just wanted to be more of a leader. I feel like I’ve been lacking in that aspect for the past few days. I thought that maybe I could start with you, and at least make one person feel more cared for.”
“Honestly, I think you’re a good leader as it is,” Kyungsoo says sincerely. “You don’t have to be overly nice to everyone and make an effort to help people in everything. It gets a bit annoying.”
The moment the words come out of his mouth, Kyungsoo regrets saying them. Junmyeon’s face falls immediately, and he looks away, his expression unhappy and disappointed. Kyungsoo stares down at his plate, not sure of what to do.
“Sorry,” Junmyeon says, his voice constricted, “I didn’t mean to annoy you.”
Kyungsoo looks up to see Junmyeon biting his lip and looking away, his face slightly flushed, obviously from disappointment and embarrassment. He sighs then stands up, and walks over to Junmyeon.
“It’s okay, hyung,” he says soothingly. “I didn’t mean it in that way.”
“No, it’s fine,” Junmyeon says haltingly, “I’m just really tired today. I wish I could be a better leader.”
Kyungsoo wraps his arms around Junmyeon and hugs him tightly, letting Junmyeon rest his head against his shoulder. “Hyung, you are the best leader anyone could wish for, okay? Believe me. You don’t have to go out of your way and try hard for it. We all love you. We appreciate you as a leader. Don’t feel down because of that.”
He feels Junmyeon’s head move slightly as he nods, and Kyungsoo smiles gently, patting Junmyeon on the back. “You should get some rest if you’re tired.”
“Stay with me,” Junmyeon mumbles, tugging at the edge of Kyungsoo’s jacket as Kyungsoo begins to move away. “It’s only the two of us in the dorm tonight, anyway. The bed’s big enough.”
Kyungsoo stops moving away and hugs Junmyeon again, amused by the turn of events. “We haven’t finished dinner yet.”
“Screw dinner,” Junmyeon yawns, grasping Kyungsoo’s arm and leading him towards the bedroom. “We can clean that up later or something. I’m too tired.”
It takes about five seconds for Kyungsoo to realize that staying at home with Junmyeon is a really, really good idea.
