The Phantom Affair

The Pulsar Skate moves nimbly through the asteroid field, easily dodging the odd floating rock with Mirax at the controls. The blue surface of Mrlsst, swirled with white, looms large in the background, while the asteroids spin, slow and silent and dark ( Read more... )

"Here we are, Dllr." Mirax nods toward the massive asteroid slowly filling the front view port. "That's Falken's old research lab, and it's where the Ghost Jedi performance broadcasts originate."

It looks like it may have been abandoned. "Teeming with life, huh?"

Mirax sets the Skate down in the docking bay with enough skill to earn her Rogue candidacy, and Dllr disembarks first, blaster in hand as he looks around the landing bay.

"Yoo-hoo! Anybody here?"

Mirax is right behind him, but pauses long enough to make sure the entry ramp closes completely. "Falken's got a reputation for being... hmm... eccentric. There isn't exactly a huge list of people eager to work for him."

Still, he's got money and reputation to have someone up here, surely?

Oh, surely.

One of those someones now has a blaster to Dllr's temple.

"Don't move!"

Dllr's hands instantly shoot up in a gesture of surrender. "I'm not moving."

"Good," the blue-skinned alien says, holding tight to his robes with one hand. "I would hate to kill you. I'm an artist, you know, not a soldier."

Reeeeeeally, now? Dllr throws a sidelong glance at his blue assailant.

"Obviously. You are threatening me with an empty blaster. See that red diode flashing?" He points one finger toward one side of the blaster--and the fictional light.

As he said: he's not a soldier, and he barely knows one end of a blaster from another.

"Really? Where?" The alien pulls the blaster away from Dllr's head, looking for the flashing light.

And that's a mistake.

Dllr immediately grabs the business end of the blaster and wrenches it away from the student, using the momentum to throw his long and lanky captor to the ground. Dropping to one knee, he holds the blaster to the back of the stunned student's head, and turns his attentions to his companions.

"Drop your guns, now!"

One of the students is thinking, 'huh,' while the other is mentally facepalming.

"Wasn't that blaster empty?" asks the first.

The second tosses aside his weapon, giving his comrade a Look. "That was a bluff."

"Oh."

Apparently, they still have much to learn.

Dllr shakes his head at the conversation. Definitely not trained in security or anything of the sort. Motioning with the blaster, Dllr lines the students up and searches them for more weapons before retraining his weapon on the back of the lead student.

"I'm glad things ended up this way," one of the students confides. "We told the Professor we couldn't keep the secret forever."

Mirax has drawn her own blaster, but she's too busy waving her hands around frustratedly as she talks to point it at anyone. "Where is Professor Falken? What were you trying to keep a secret? Where are those datacards you stole?"

"The datacards are destroyed," the student replies, then hurries on when he sees their shocked expressions. "But that doesn't matter, you see -- the Phantom Ship Project doesn't exist!"

Both Dllr and Mirax are, needless to say, a bit surprised at this revelation. Neither of them are especially pleased, either.

"Would you care to explain that statement? I mean, you were trying to rip off the Imperials and the Rebels with nonexistent military technology?" The blaster she was waving? Is now steadily pointed at the students.

The student sighs. "The project was invented to milk the Empire for money. A few of us students," he indicates himself and the two others, "defected, and we gave the information to you Rebels. It made the Empire poorer, which was obviously very much in your interests."

Another sigh. "When the Emperor fell, the pressure on us was increased. The Empire wants to destroy you, and they need any and all weapons they can get."
