Oppression/Resistance This simple information graphic depicts various forms of privilege and oppression as a set of multiple spectra (lines) that all intersect at a central point. The ends of each line is labelled with the “privilege” on the top half of the graphic and its corresponding “oppression/resistance” on the bottom half, while the line itself is labeled with the associated “-ism”. While the graphic doesn’t use the term, it can therefore be considered a visualization of kyriarchy.
The desire for philosophy Interview with Judith Butler.
Negative feminism, anti-social queer theory and the politics of hope What is negative feminism and anti-social queer theory? My fragmentary answer: it is a queer critique that aims to decenter positivity, productivity, redemptive politics of affirmation, narratives of success, and politics that are founded on hope for an imagined future. It’s rude politics and has no interest in being polite. It embraces masochism, anti-production, self-destructiveness, abjection, forgetfulness, radical passivity, aggressive negation, unintelligibility, negativity, punk pugilism, and anti-social attitudes as a form of resistance to liberal feminist and gay politics of cohesion. It’s about not-becoming because the notion of becoming is perceived as following the capitalist logic of production and models of success that are often tied up with colonialism.
You Don’t Get to Be Normal One of the most common questions that sex educators hear is “am I normal?” A lot of people feel incredible amounts of anxiety when they imagine that they aren’t normal, especially when it comes to sex. That has plenty of consequences for people’s sex lives and relationships. Ironically, it’s rooted in what I call the Myth of the Normal, rather than how things really are.
Liberate Your Ass: Why Sexual Freedom Is Key To Fighting The Right It’s hardly news that neo-conservative groups are waging a war on sex. But it’s often a surprise to me how rarely progressive movements integrate sexuality issues into their efforts. In my view, there is no freedom without sexual freedom.
Fertility, Gender, Sterilisation, Womanhood The reproductive rights debate in the United States swirls tightly around the uterus, putting those who have reproductive capacity at the middle and those who do not somewhere else. Some of us are swept up into the eddy and labeled as women; we are part of the right’s ‘war on women’ even though we are not women. Others are coldly shut out because they lack fertility, because they are fake-women, because they had hysterectomies or are post-menopausal and thus aren’t fertile or because they have some other anatomy altogether.
Everybody’s Trans: Gender Oppression Hurts All of Us In a gender-binary world, a world that is set up based on two distinct genders, if one is perceived to be outside the binary (whether that person actually identifies outside that binary or not), the possibility of gender oppression exists. For many trans folks, the discrimination we often experience has to do with how someone else might perceive our gender, but people who don’t identify as trans but who express their gender in ways that don’t conform to the sex they were assigned at birth often experience discrimination, as well.
Netroots Nation gets the first step of trans inclusion rightMost people, even in progressiveville, haven’t thought about how to be inclusive of and respectful towards trans folks until they’re confronted with the issue directly. To make the space accountable to trans folks, a conference like Netroots needs to be explicit and proactive. Which is why I’m super jazzed that there’s a “Transgender Etiquette” section in the conference program this year. Even better - it’s on the page of maps, where it’s pretty impossible to miss. Even more better - the statement’s actually good.
The difficulties of being a demisexual lesbian I just don’t want sex with a person who I don’t have an emotional bond with. I fully believe this is why it took me so long (and so many failed relationships with men) to realize that I was not, in fact, bisexual. I always figured, well the sexual attraction will come with time, I just have to get to know them first. Which would be accurate if I was bisexual as well, but I’m not. So I would get into a relationship with a man, figuring that I would naturally want to have sex with him once the emotional bond took place, we would bond and then…no sexual attraction. It was disappointing to be honest. I wasn’t sure what I was doing wrong.
Men with Stay-at-Home Wives More Likely to be Sexist in the Workplace “We found that employed husbands in traditional marriages, compared to those in modern marriages, tend to (a) view the presence of women in the workplace unfavorably, (b) perceive that organizations with higher numbers of female employees are operating less smoothly, (c) find organizations with female leaders as relatively unattractive, and (d) deny, more frequently, qualified female employees opportunities for promotion.”
Feminism + Housewifery In any comment section on the internet where feminism comes up, someone will pipe up and cry, “But feminism is about CHOICE!” No. Feminism is not about choice - at least not insofar as it’s about saying “Any choice women make is a feminist one and so we can’t criticize or judge it.” Feminism isn’t about creating non-judgmental happy-rainbow enclaves where women can do whatever they want without criticism. Feminism is about achieving social, economic and political equality for all people, regardless of gender. It’s not about making every woman feel good about whatever she does, or treating women like delicate hot-house flowers who can’t be criticized.
What Sex-Positivity Can Offer The Sex Workers’ Rights Movement Further, by recognizing the differences between sex-positivity and enthusiasm for sex, we can develop much more clarity around the experiences of sex workers without forcing them into either of the common myths of “happy hooker” or “exploited victim.” Sex-positivity can help us listen to their stories in all of their complexities instead of forcing them to fit the fantasies that our imaginations and society create. It can help us understand the difference between sex work and sex trafficking by making it easier to let go of the sex-negative judgments that often accompany discussions of sex work.
Not just for kids anymore. This attitude isn't just a family thing, though. It's coming from all over. When I was a teenager, I felt like everyone--doctors, teachers, politicians, police, pundits--was trying to control and repress my sexuality. Now that I'm older... I feel like everyone is trying to control and repress teenage sexuality, and I'm collateral damage.
Sex education: we should teach young people about more than the mechanics Sex education, as all too many experience it, is like teaching people how to drive by telling them in detail what's under the bonnet, how the bits work, how to maintain them safely to avoid accidents, what the controls do and when to go on the road. It's all about the mechanics. And that's it. There's a growing consensus that young people don't need sex education, they need comprehensive sexuality education. CSE is sex education plus: the mechanics, plus a lots more about sexuality. That means not just teaching young people about the biology of sex, but also teaching them about the personal, emotional, societal and cultural forces which shape the way in which they choose to conduct their lives.
Understanding Adultism: A Key to Developing Positive Youth-Adult Relationships To be successful in our work with young people, we must understand a particular condition of youth: that young people are often mistreated and disrespected simply because they are young. The word adultism refers to behaviors and attitudes based on the assumption that adults are better than young people, and entitled to act upon young people without their agreement. This mistreatment is reinforced by social institutions, laws, customs, and attitudes.
Olympics struggle with ‘policing femininity’ There are female athletes who will be competing at the Olympic Games this summer after undergoing treatment to make them less masculine. Still others are being secretly investigated for displaying overly manly characteristics, as sport’s highest medical officials attempt to quantify - and regulate - the hormonal difference between male and female athletes.
The use and abuse of honour based violence in the UK Their experience of violence is in fact part of a continuum of violence against women ↑ , but it is increasingly perceived as a cultural practice in debates where we are witness to an extraordinary loose use of the term ‘honour based violence’. If we are to take the matter seriously, it is vital to unpack the term to reveal the underlying patriarchal dynamics of control and patterns of gender inequality. One important part of this exercise is the need to differentiate between the two main contexts in which the honour motif arises.
Ethical Alternatives to Being an Ally - Second Thoughts Understanding that ally-etiquette is about transferring power can also make life easier for us, because it explains why those rules feel difficult and disempowering. It’s a way to channel our energy into truly supporting and empowering those you work with, rather than in being confused or beating ourselves up because we don’t feel like a good happy ally.
