"The boss of television used to come down periodically to our rehearsal room and say 'Well done, we had another letter of protest from Mary Whitehouse in the Times this morning, that's another million viewers".
It seems that it used to be that if she disliked a show, it almost had to be good - sort of like how in the US it usually means a show is good if Fox quickly cancels it. The latter having the obvious disadvantage that the show is no longer around.
