Okay, so as you all know, today is the Smallville series finale. In fandom, we've talked about this show ending for years and yet now that the finale is actually here, most of us really can't take it. I know I can't. I've overwhelmed and have been choked up all morning. With every post I see of people saying goodbye, I get all emotional again.
It's had its ups and downs over the years, but it's still a show that we watched and become invested in. It's harder in fandom because we spend so much more time thinking about it. We write meta, fic, make art and vids from it ... we talk about it constantly. So all of a sudden, Smallville becomes more than a TV show ... it becomes part of our lives. These characters are more than just fictional people- we feel like we know them and have grown to love them and care about what happens to them.
I haven't been watching since Day 1, though I know a lot of you have, but it has been a part of my life for the past 6 years. Once I got to fandom, it became even more important.
Because of Smallville, I joined fandom. I wrote fic and participated in discussions. I have had my issues with both the show and the fandom, but I have also met a lot of people online and made tons of great friends that I wouldn't trade for anything. I truly hope that I won't lose you guys once the show is over.
I am happy that we got 10 whole years and when I look back on this show, it will be with fondness and affection. I will forever think of it as a show I loved, despite its many flaws.
So thank you to everyone who has made this journey such a fun one and though they'll never see this message, I'm grateful to everyone who was ever apart of the show and all the hard work they put in to give us entertainment on a weekly basis for the past decade.
Now let's hope for an awesome finale! I am keeping my fingers crossed for great ratings and a kickass episode. Because Smallville deserves to go out with a bang. :D
