10.18 'Booster' review!
It's Friday, which means there's new Smallville! NGL, I'm kind of sad because with every new episode, we get one step closer to the end. I think I need to be alone in the house when the finale airs, so I can cry, because I'm pretty sure I will. Support group anyone? LOL
Anyway, this episode looked cracktastic from the trailers and I wasn't really sure what to expect. I figured it'd be pretty awful and kept my expectations low.
But once more, I was pleasantly surprised! It was actually good. I ended up enjoying it. Tom Welling did an awesome job directing (I didn't even know until today that he was directing this one) but that's no surprise. There were a few minor things that bothered me, but overall, I think this is a win.
The Good:
Tom Welling was a really great director. What I love about him is that he not only knows what to do to bring out the best in Clark, he manages to do the same with all the other characters. He gets everyone and I always am excited when he's directing.
Speaking of his character, Clark was fantastic in this episode. He was everything I wanted him to be- heroic, strong, smart, sweet ... just all around perfect. I absolutely loved him. I was cheering him on when he was figuring things out, realizing that there was more to Booster's saves and recognizing the consequences. How adorable was dorky!Clark though? I know he doesn't like the glasses, but I love them. Plus, he was really good in 'bumbling' mode. I wanted to give him a hug when he was reluctant to going back to how he was in Smallville- ignored, treated like a geek. But he was just great. Once again, he proved that he's my Superman (and the scene where he changes in the phone booth was rather epic).
And Lois certainly thinks so! I love how supportive they were of one another, Lois cheering him on in his double life and Clark encouraging her with the promotion. They're such a great, loving couple but still manage to be damn sexy, as shown in the last scene. I love the way he was checking her out (because you know he was). I love that he was worried about what people would think of her, being with a dorky version of himself and them not believing she'd fall for him. Aww, Clark, you're constantly underestimating yourself and Lois definitely showed you that, didn't she? The shirt rip was hot (though I wish he had taken off the rest of his clothes too!) and you know they went at it. Yum. Never change, Clois!
Lois was quite awesome too, standing up for her man. I love how unimpressed she was with Booster too and how she was proud of him at the end, when he indicated that Jaime was the real hero. I was happy she got her promotion but I'm kind of sad she's leaving Clark behind. Hopefully he moves up soon!
I also liked Clark's interactions with Booster. Tom Welling's efforts into making Booster more than one dimensional arrogant character succeeded. We could see glimpses of a Booster who is not completely self absorbed through the episode and I'm glad that he finally got a clue. Thanks to Clark. Like I said, I liked Clark's speech to Booster, about the costume not being as important and I was happy to see Booster importing that wisdom on the kid and helping him through and take control of the scarab. Their final scene together was interesting as well and I LOL'd at how he said that the name should be something that actually started with 'S' and mentioned 'Super'. Smallville is totally not subtle but I don't care.
Even Cat was amusing! Her crush on Booster Gold was more than a little hilarious. Her interactions with Lois actually amused me and I like their conversation at the end. I kind of wanted one of those cookies though, the ones with the Superman symbol frosting. Her expression when Clark knocked over the box cracked me up.
The Bad:
While I get what Lois was doing with Jaime and it's good that she's helping him, it was a waste of her screentime. I'd rather see Lois doing her journalist thing rather than being the savior of bullied kids everywhere. There's no need for that. I just generally want to see more of her investigating- chasing down a lead, writing a front page story ... anything! Come on, show! There's only a few episodes left.
Some of the scenes were redundant. Yes, I get that Booster Gold is an arrogant, show off. You've emphasized the point that he likes attention. Let's go back to Lois and Clark please?
The Jaime storyline reminded me a bit of 'Warrior'. Bullied kid gets powers? While there were differences, it definitely wasn't the most original out there.
Overall:
I think it was a solid episode and like I said, I enjoyed it. They managed to make an episode about Booster Gold relevant to Clark. But in this late in the season, with only a few episodes remaining, I feel like we should be concentrating more on Darkseid and not random guest stars. It still was one of the stronger episodes in the second half.
Next week's trailer seems ... interesting? I don't know how I feel yet but I am excited to see Clark and Oliver have scenes together again.
