Dru’s sketch pad was in her lap and her pencil was clutched tightly in her fingers, but she wasn’t focused on the paper. Instead her mind was replaying the argument she’d had with her father earlier in the afternoon.
”I don’t see why I have to go to some dumb boarding school,” Dru said angrily. “I’m supposed to be your partner!.”
Her father shook his head. He didn’t like doing this. But it was for the best. If this lead panned out, she’d be safer away from him. Not that he’d tell her that. Then she’d never go. “You are my partner. But this is too good an opportunity to pass up. This is a chance for you to learn things that’ll help us both out when you get back. It’s just for a semester.”
“Dad!” she said, embarrassed to hear a trace of whine in her voice. “I don’t need some special school. I’ve done just fine going to school wherever we end up.”
“Dru, I’m not arguing about this any longer. You’re leaving for Fandom Friday morning.” It was his no-questions asked voice, Dru realized. The same one he used when they were on the hunt and he told her to do something. He wasn’t going to change his mind.
Feeling frustrated and alone, Dru took a deep breath and went up to her room.
Dru set the pencil and pad aside, she wasn’t going to be drawing tonight. Instead she glanced towards where her bag was on the floor next to her bed, ready to be packed. Fortunately four years of travelling around the southeast and never staying in one spot for more than a few weeks meant it wouldn’t take her long to throw her few possessions into it.
She’d go. She’d learn. But she wasn’t going to like it.
