Soap Stone Counters?

Or not?  I have to decide, and soon.  And if the answer is "not" then what do I get?  I've been settled on Soap Stone for a while, but I'm getting some really high quotes from the fabricators. Phooey.

Soapstone:

A stone fabricator came to the house tonight to show me some samples, and he had this granite called "Verde Maritaka" that in person, really resembles the green soap stone.

Here it is in one kitchen - which I LOVE ...

(except for the humongous faucet, of course)

It's actually very similar to what I'm doing: Wood floors, stone main counter, butcher block secondary counter, white cabinets.

My dishwasher is going to be fully integrated with a panel like that one; the sales rep sold me a black one because it was the least expensive, and I'll be removing the front panel anyway.  I'll be pissed if I get a black stripe on the bottom like the one in that photo!

But I digress ...

Here's more verde maritaka looking every bit like granite, and not at all like soapstone:

Pretty, but not the vintage/period look I'm going for.

Opinions anyone?
