More kitchen pictures

I didn't have my stove in place when I took those earlier pictures, so I took more this morning. What you don't see is the table we're using in place of the eventual island; I moved it out of the way for photos

Thanks - I don't know if you've seen many of the earlier remodeling entries, but it's been pretty consuming for quite a while.

Really liking that snazzy lighting fixture. ;) I suspect that might be the next obsession.

It all look so nice! Boy, that fridge is a tight fit - are you worried about an eventual replacement not fitting in the spot?

I bet you wish you could have lights like that!

What do you mean "next" obsession - I've been looking on ebay for period ones for a few months. Tsk - really! Actually, I have some old ones that were removed from my parents old house, but I'm not sure where to use them. One of them is a school house light that would look nice in there, but I'm not sure where. I think it's too big to go in front of the window.

Heh - the fridge is a tight fit because I put the wall there! No, we will always have a 30" fridge because on the right side of it (cut off in the photo) is circulation to the stairs going up. Plus, if that wall were any further to the right, it would block some windows.

It is a hanging one, but the problem is, it's too big for in front of the small windows, and over the island, I'll probably hang something either long, or double pendants. I don't want to have two single drops four feet away from each other in the same room.

I suppose I could solve the problem by doing two tiny drops over the sink, and the schoolhouse light over the island. That would also help minimize a weird occurrence I have going on at the sink: I knew that the sink wasn't going to be centered under the window, but coincidently, the center of the sink is *nearly* centered on one of the mullions. It looks like a near miss. I was afraid if I centered a pendant on the sink, it would exacerbate the "problem." (it's not really that big a deal.) I wonder if two small lights would really accentuate it?

It looks fabulous. And really makes me miss my white cabinets, farmhouse sink and soapstone. : (

Oh, I'm so glad you chimed in! haven't seen you around here in a while - I hope you're updating your LJ.

I have a question about oiling this stuff - they installers used mineral oil, which is what I'd heard to use. But it was *baby oil.* Do you think that's OK? I was getting tired of waiting for it to dry, and I buffed it with a paper towel. Then I noticed some whitish residue, but that might have been from the paper, and not the oil.

I'm a little disappointed that areas of it look "mottled" I was expecting the black to be black and not "patchy." I'm sure I'll get used to the natural variation, though. Overall, I'm very happy with it.

Ooh, thanks for the input. I just googled baby oil, and the ingredients are "mineral oil and fragrance." So hopefully, the brand they used was Johnson's or something equal.

One of the reasons it took so long to get is that the stone yard had a shipment that - even by their own admission - was downright splotchy. I had to wait 'til they got more in to chose from. It's so hard to see all the nuances of a dirty, unpolished piece, I didn't notice any unevenness in this - only the veining, which is delicate and which I like (I'm not a fan of the big swishes of veining in soapstone.) so I was disappointed to see I didn't completely escape that "spotted" look in some areas.

Unfortunately, it's in the area that will get the most abuse - right over the dishwasher, where we tend to stack the dirty stuff before washing.

I forgot to add about this. The one good thing (and maybe the only good thing) about this renovation is that we decided to do minimal housecleaning until the chaos is over!

Ugh, that sounds horrible! (But good practice for when you do the kitchen.)

Living with the chaos stinks; the worst part for me is the guilt, since my son is a junior in high school, and planning to go to college. I would like to get this stuff done so he can enjoy it!
