I'm getting really excited about this weekend. I'm flying to Northern California on Thursday night instead of Friday, which is rather pleasant, because it means I get a little more time with my boyfriend.
From time to time, people say to me "aren't you afraid of flying now?" I always answer "No, of course not!" But it got me thinking, why should I be afraid of flying? Flying is safer than driving, you don't often hear about plane crashes that were head-on collisions with another plane, do you? No, because they don't happen, but every single day you hear about head-on collisions between cars. Then the argument is brought up about airport security. Well I felt safe before 9/11 flying and I feel safe now. I have to be honest though, I can't figure out how keeping people from seeing off passengers at the airport makes it safer. Everyone had to go through the x-ray machine before, and it's the same damn machine now that it was a year ago. I kinda resent the fact that I can't see my boyfriend off, or get seen off at the airport or that I can't meet someone at the gate. That was always the best part of flying for me when I was growing up. To get off the plane and see my family and/or friends waiting for me at the gate, to know I was expected. Walking off a plane now seems cold and sterile. Remember what it was like to watch planes take off? How cool it was when you were a kid? Well that's been taken away. And you know, it's not fun sitting in an airport for three hours waiting for your flight all alone. When I used to fly the person who dropped me off could sit with me at the airport bar and chat. I hate sitting by myself in the airport, I feel like a loser surrounded by losers. In other words, it sucks! And the things you're no longer allowed to bring on a plane as carry ons, WTF? You can't bring tweezers on board because what, you're gonna groom the crew to death? The big dark plan is to pluck everyone's eyebrows until they turn over the plane? Come on, let's get real. What can I do with my nail file, make everyone cry uncle by creating a horrible noise with the emory board? I think that the the TSA needs to address the real dangers and stop picking on things that aren't the dangers. I'm much more concerned about say a knife than a roll of quarters, and yet, every time I have a roll of quarters in my bag I get stopped.
I've flown international since 9/11. If you think the US is bad, you should see the regulations they have in place in Aruba. You can't bring ANY electronic devices into the terminal, that includes cell phones, walkmen, game boys. Check out the list.
