It was an odd relationship.

Half the time they were on opposing sides.

(They were both very, very good shots. No-one else could fire so convincingly accurately at someone and yet never hit them.)

Conversely, the times they worked together, they clashed almost constantly. Opinions, methods, morals. Each job could equally be defined as an argument in progress. Both too stubborn and convinced of the validity of their own viewpoint.

Half the time they were on opposite sides of the world.

(Communications tended towards the short and cryptic. Neither man was inclined to be demonstrative. Alex had got jerking off to what was left unsaid down to a fine art.)

On the occasions where they were in the same timezone, they were mostly either jetlagged, on the run, or being shot at. Often by each other.

It was odd, then, Alex reflected sleepily. That a relationship otherwise so full of conflict should find its balance at times like this. Those that knew them (and precious few knew the whole truth about their involvement) assumed that they would be at their fiercest when it came to sex. That their coupling would be full of fire and anger and violence.

And to be fair, they had never lacked passion. But when the world was shut out, and everything else could be shed with their clothes, it was those moments when they found peace in each other.

To lie in each others' arms and communicate simply with a brush of lips or fingertips, to hold and be held, to sleep and be safe.

Outside, and tomorrow, the storm of the world would rage once more. But for now, in the calm darkness of the bed, they had each other, and it was enough.
