It was just kinda shocking. Oddly enough, I'm used to folks passing over, generationally. But he was such a familiar figure in the length of my life that I feel like a friend or family of sorts has passed over. I think that Quincy Jones said it best:
'I am absolutely devastated at this tragic and unexpected news.
'For Michael to be taken away from us so suddenly at such a young age, I just don't have the words.'
Jones said Jackson 'had it all - talent, grace, professionalism and dedication'.
He added: 'I've lost my little brother today, and part of my soul has gone with him.'
And then there's David Carradine (kung fu references) passing and even Farrah Fawcett...whose partner was Ryan O'Neal. (Talk about the echos of history...)
Interesting times...
I was just saying to my sister last night - as she was relating the incredible success of my niece - that I feel like my time has passed and that it's time for others to pick up the torch. ("Middle age")
However, this morning that feeling is over. Yes, it's important that we nurture the next generation. But, ya know what, it ain't over 'til it's over. Maybe Michael's passing, instead of indicating a passing of the rest of us/our time, is a call to arms.
Transcendence. Be ready.
