Adventureland. Went to it only having read a couple of good reviews, and because it was raining a bit too much yesterday to make walking around downtown Boston enjoyable. I had seen the feedback on
Rotten Tomatoes and
Metacritic, and generally, for a movie like this (or what I thought it was like), it was getting some positive word of mouth.
Generally, I gravitate towards dirty and raunchy comedies. I'm a huge South Park and Eastbound and Down fan, as well as the original American Pie, 40-Year-Old-Virgin, Knocked Up, and very recently, I Love You, Man. I enjoyed Superbad all right, and was kind of curious to check out this movie because it was directed by the same guy, Greg Mottola.
So, of course I was expecting Superbad set in the 80's.
It's not.
It's actually one of the warmest, sweetest, not overly-saccharine drama-comedies that I've seen in quite some time. The jokes are at times obvious and subtle, but the dialogue and performances are so wonderfully rendered, that there's no good/bad guy. All the credit to the lead stars, Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, and Martin Starr, who excelled in their roles. Particularly Eisenberg, as the protagonist James. Erudite and awkward, he infused his performance with so much natural charisma and humor that I couldn't help but fall for him.
And apparently, after seeing Eisenberg in Adventureland, he is my Anthony Goldstein. Just . . . perfect. Will have to make icons at some point in the future.
I'm seriously trying to refrain from going to see it again. Aaron and I keep talking about it too; something about the movie struck just the right chord with the pair of us. It helped that it had the best 80's soundtrack, like, ever! LOL!
