Two lowbrow things that are amusing me at the moment:

1. Many of you will have read about this by now. If not, a quick summary:

The wireless internet service in the NZ town Whakatane effectively censored its own name by installing a content filter that operates phonetically. The issue with the filter is that, in Maori, "wh" is pronounced almost as an "f".

More amusing for me, however, is that the town didn't foresee the issue. After all, residents of the town are mercilessly teased when visiting Auckland, and Whakapapa doesn't have this problem.

2. As part of a grammar exercise on negation for my French class, we tutors asked to look up the address of a few French internet dating sites. We wanted something as cheesy as possible, so the only two I knew about (thanks, French hotmail address and accompanying ads!), match.com and meetic.fr, didn't really cut it. A google search got me serencontrer.com, etreinte.com, and the charmingly-named cum.fr, which lauds itself for providing "rencontres de qualité sur internet".

... we didn't use that last one.
