I went back to Indian Valley again today with a hunting partner and I think I lied. I'm going to give it a few more chances though I still didn't see anything. I did see a bunch of scat that looked like it could be from pigs and beds and possible tracks. Unfortunately none of them were definate signs and I didn't see any obvious wallows, rooting ( Read more... )

If you want a pig hunting partner that can be quiet, let me know.

I do but we live so far apart, though you are pretty close to Monterrey county which, according to statistics, is the motherload of pig hunting in the state. Did you know that Monterrey county accounts for over 50% of all pig taken in the state, though it is down from an all time high of over 70%? Hmm...maybe I can take a Friday night off and spend the weekend there and we can find the public land that the pigs are taken in Santa Cruz county. They have the best public land ratio in the state. Last year 14 were taken on public land and 31 taken on private land. That compares with 9 and 93 in the county I was hunting and 0 and 43 where I live. Let me know. I'm definately interested.

I'll look into it and let you know. I wonder if I could use my SKS to hunt pigs. I really need to get a proper rifle.

Cool. I quick search on google yielded this article.

This part is particularly interesting:

The 7.62x39 round carved its niche in Australia as a pig hunting round, and feral animals such as goats, pigs and dogs would be well within the capabilities of both the round and the rifle. So would many of the smaller species of deer that have been introduced to this country.

SKS is real proper in dense brush. Great rate of fire at a fast moving target low range. In the mountains, valleys, and canyons a scope is preferable I think.

I'm considering putting a scope mount on the SKS, though I'm not sure. It's a reasonably decent cartridge for medium sized game, however I could probably get a decent bolt-action for as much as the mount and the scope. Plus I've been resistant to putting optics on the gun.

Looks like Fort Hunter Liggett is a good option for hunting wild pigs on public land. If we went, we'd have to get serious about it and hunt the entire weekend. I'd be willing, if you are.
