Day 26 - A horror movie that you love but everyone else hates

Buffy, The Vampire Slayer (1992)

I don't know if someone hates this movie, I don't even think many people watched it anyway. I saw it once before they decided to make a TV series and I enjoyed it.  It was a surprise though, that Josh Whedon believed his idea had the potential to become a real series. I'm glad he did. The movie is not much like the show. The characters are completely different. This is Buffy before moving to Sunnydale.
Krystie Swanson is "enhanced" Buffy (she is twice Sarah Michell Geller)
Her sidekick is a combination of Xander and Spike (for those who have seen the show, you know what I'm talking about.) His name is Pike and he wears a black duster. He is not a vampire and there are no friendly vampires in the movie.
The big bad is Rutger Hauer, still pretty, and his sidekick (yes, he has one) is played by Paul Reubens (Peewee Herman.) Both are vampires, great combination of talent.
Buffy's first Watcher is Merrick, played by Donald Sutherland.
The movie was almost forgotten after its release, so it was kind of a stretch to see the idea taking off on TV.
What I like of this movie and the show in general is the concept of girl power. There is nothing wrong on being young, pretty and independent. The characters are light and easy to understand. The big bad is bad, no layers, he just want to take over the world. The sense of humor is clever and the dialogues are funny.
Maybe it's just a silly movie, with vampires, but it's enough to spend a good afternoon with friends and popcorn. Oh, I almost forgot, Pike is played by Luke Perry, the lovely and troublesome Dylan McKay from Beverly Hills 90210.
