The plus side of being ill, is that you get to curl up in bed with a pile of books that you've been meaning to get around to reading. At the moment they consist of a few Barbara Erskine and James Herbert novels, however I'm pining after a book I just can't get my hands on at the moment.
The book in question is the third in a trilogy named the Percheron Trilogy by Fiona McIntosh. I've read Odalisque and Emissery, and after devouring them in quick succession, I'm literally drooling at the mouth in anticipation of Goddess, the third and final book. The trilogy was inspired by the Topkapi Palace and it's magnificent Harem, and incorporating it into her books, she creates a rich and wonderful world and the location of percheron, with it's dominating Palace, and the devious and sometimes tragic politics that occur there. I was literally swept away by the easy description she infuses the text with and could quite easily read for hours on end, lost in the pages. However, it's not only the infighting between the royal hierarchy that grasps my interest, but also a more subtle theme in the books, telling of ancient battles and feudes between the old gods and the new, and this theme becomes more prominant as the books move along. For someone who reads purely for the pleasure of the story and the world it exists in, I have found it creates wonderful escapism.
Unfortunately the paperback isn't released here until May, and the hardback I can find absolutely no where. I have a suspicion that I may be looking in the wrong place but it will be a triumphant day when I get my hands on them. ^_^
For now though I shall content myself with Barbara Erskine, a bit less fantastical but still very enjoyable to read. If only my cat would behave for once! Another night of her chasing her bells around my bedroom floor and I might go mad!
