i had the day off work today, and although i set off from the house rather later than i had hoped, i managed to get quite a lot done; pick up my foreigner's registration card, cycle a few miles, go to an art gallery in ginza and then got to the UN for an interpretation training course. it was fascinating, far more interactive than i thought it ( Read more... )

'the speaker you want to imitate' and.... kojira lessons??? where did that come from?!

I finally get that! My addled brain wasn't working too well this morning so I didn't get the link between 'monster imitation' and 'ゴジラ’。。。so the whole point of the entry is basically that although i had considered getting into intrepretation i hadn't realised the extent to which modern day interpretation theory advises you to totally imitate the speaker as if you were doing their dubbing- down to their gestures, the tone of voice and so on, so that you be basically a medium for their message and an emotional blank yourself. weird. but very very interesting.

I thought that was the gist of it. Might make an interesting short film - angry mafia meet angry Yakuza and some crazy battle ensues - between them, between their interpreters and between them and their interpreters. Or something.

Might be quite funny.
