Summary: “I wish I could go back to when we were just seven years old.”
Yuuya plopped down on the empty space on the sofa beside his best friend. Gulping down the remaining cola in his beer glass, he then burped, just to get a not-so-friendly punch on his upper arm.
“What the hell, Kazumi?!” he complained.
Without releasing her knees from her hug, Kazumi rolled her eyes to him. She gave him an unpleasant stare, and he knew the face she hid behind her knees was more unpleasing to see.
“I should be the one saying that,” she grunted. “You clearly know I’m not in the mood to entertain you-or be entertained by your company. Now, shoo. Go away. Leave me alone.”
He frowned. “For how long do you want to stay like this? Yabu-kun still won’t come tonight even if you put on that awful face until tomorrow.”
“Shut up. I don’t need you to remind me.”
“Just enjoy the night. Your parents hold this party not for letting you sulking over your absent boyfriend,” he said as he stood up and threw a small sofa pillow to her lightly in the process.
“Jerk!” She threw it back in no time and right to the back of his head, made him yelped in surprise-and slight pain. She must had thrown it with all her might.
He sent a pleading look to Kazumi’s older brother, but the later just shrugged helplessly. Yuuya sighed. It was used to be very easy to redeem her anger-treat her two hamburgers or one with lots of meats-but after Yabu Kouta became her boyfriend, he was all she needed. Unfortunately, he was currently out of town with his family. He was in Yokohama, his hometown, having a Christmas Eve party with the relatives from his mother’s side.
Yuuya looked at Kazumi over his shoulder. Even though Kazumi’s older brother had told him to just ignore her, he really couldn’t. Her sad aura somehow reached him; it made him feeling too disturbed to the extent he couldn’t enjoy eating his favorite roasted chicken. She ruined his merry mood. He seriously didn’t like that.
Stupid friendship, he thought.
Munching on the chicken, his mind searched for ways to slap that grumpy face away from her. Then he got an idea.
“Where are you going, Yuuya?” Yuuya’s mother asked when she saw her son wearing his jacket and scarf. Yuuya didn’t answer. He approached Kazumi and pulled her arm rather roughly. She got really surprised by the sudden action.
“Let’s go.”
“WAIT! Yuuya! What are you doing?! Let me go!”
“Mom, Dad, Mr. and Mrs. Tainaka, we’ll be going out for a while,” Yuuya told their parents as he dragged her away from the living room, completely not minding Kazumi’s attempt to free her arm from his grasp. But her yells made his teeth gritted in annoyance.
He released her arm before the front door, putting on his shoes. “Put on your shoes.”
She huffed, her arms crossed before her chest. “No.”
“Kazumi-”
“I don’t recall agreeing with you.”
“Just. Put. Them. On.”
Kazumi was taken aback by the tone of his voice. It was as low as a growl and commanding. And the way he stared at her sent chills to her nape.
She realized she had made him angry. Now she had no choice but to follow whatever he says. She had never won against an angry Takaki Yuuya since they were children, anyway. Someheow his anger always weakened her.
“Hmph!” She turned away.
“Hey-”
“I’m taking my jacket in my room. You don’t want me to die freezing out there, do you?”
He doubted her; she might use the jacket as a reason to go back to her room and lock herself up there-she had done it once.
“Two minutes! I’ll barge into your room if you take longer than two minutes!”
There was a pause for a while before he heard a shout from the upstairs. “Give me four minutes!”
Kazumi clutched on her jacket tightly when they were out of her house. She was trembling slightly. Her legs pressed on to each other, searching for warmth from each other’s skin. “It’s freezing,” she complained.
She heard a snort coming from Yuuya. “Then why are you wearing shorts if you can’t bear the cold? You don’t want to die freezing out here, do you?” he said mockingly.
She pouted and looked down at her knee-length jacket, which wasn’t really helping. “Shut up. I wear whatever I want to wear.”
“You will get sick.”
“Then you will have to take care of me,” she talked back, “since you are the one who forced me to go out.”
He rolled his eyes. “Fine. Now, come on.”
Few minutes had passed as they walked in silence. At first, they were busy with their own thought, but then Kazumi decided to erase the quiet atmosphere. She glanced at Yuuya, who was staring at the cloudy sky.
“Ne, Yuuya.”
“Ng?”
“About my behaviour before-I’m sorry.”
Yuuya turned his head to her, looking somewhat surprised. “Wow. I didn’t think you would calm down this fast.”
“I really don’t want to say this but thanks to you, I can think clearly now.”
“Sweet. You’re welcome.”
She chuckled bitterly. “I guess I was just upset because we hardly see each other lately, Kouta-kun and I,” she said, then heaved a long sigh. “I understand that he is busy with his college life and other stuff. Well, I am busy, too. But… he is often busy whenever I have the time to meet him. I myself barely have much free time to accept the date he offered. And now he cancelled our chance to meet-his promise to me to see the illumination together in Christmas Eve. Not that he wants it this way, I know. Luck just isn’t on our side.”
She remembered the apologies Kouta cried out over and over again through the phone yesterday night, as he explained his reason of why he couldn’t fulfill his own promise. Actually, his parents didn’t forced him to go to Yokohama with them, but it seemed like his father’s leg was still not in good condition to drive a car-Mr. Yabu cracked the bone on his left leg due to falling from his bicycle few days ago-and he was the only one in his family who could drive it beside his father. Also, he felt bad for his mother if he didn’t take her to the party; she had been excited about it since the beginning of December.
“Why fate likes to make things hard for us?” Kazumi whispered particularly to no one, but loud enough for Yuuya to hear. She buried her nose in the scarf around her neck. “I really miss him.”
“You’re not the only one who feel that way,” Yuuya spoke up.
She blinked at him a few times, then it hit her. His girlfriend was overseas since five months ago for student exchange program. How could she forget that?
“Sorry. I guess I was talking too much,” she apologized, rubbing the back of her head.
He raised an eyebrow. “Why are you apologizing?”
“Huh?”
“Uh, nothing.”
She looked at him weird, but she let it slide. “How is she?” she asked.
“She said Singapore was fine. And it would be her first time to experience winter without snow,” he smiled as he talked about his girlfriend.
Kazumi chuckled lightly. “There’s no winter in Singapore!”
“Yeah. She’s so lucky to spend her time in a warm country, while we are dying here in the harshness of winter…,” he said jokingly. She laughed along.
“Anyway, Yuuya,” she said after the laugh between them died down. “Where are we going?”
Yuuya paused for a moment. “… Where would you like to go?”
“Hold on there, sir. I’m the one asking. Don’t you ask me back.”
“Well, I don’t know.”
She gave him a ridiculous stare. “You forced me to gou out with you yet you don’t had any idea on where to go?”
“Yyyyeeah…?”
She turned her heels. “I’m leaving.”
“Wait wait wait! No! Don’t go back!” He tried to stop her from walking away by grabbing her upper arm. “Okay, the downtown! We’ll go to the downtown!”
“The downtown?”
Yuuya nodded. “How does it sound?”
She took seconds to answer. “Talking about downtown makes me hungry…”
“That’s because you refused to eat back in your house, you stupid,” he stated.
“Ne, Yuuya. I’ve just got a good idea.”
“Huh? We’re not going to the downtown?”
“No-I mean, yes, we are going. But let’s spend this year’s Christmas Eve like how we used to do when we were still kids! You haven’t forgotten about what we usually did, right?”
“You mean the Happy Meals we bought ourselves using the extra pocket money? And then we ate them at the playground?”
“… Nothing else? Just bought Happy Meals and ate them?”
“Er, I think so. I don’t really remember. It was freaking thirteen to fourteen years ago, you know.”
“It’s okay. I myself only remember those.” She clapped her hands. “Then it’s decided. Let’s go to McD!”
“You seriously have a great mood swing tonight,” Yuuya said, amused by a skipping Kazumi before him.
“It’s been a long time since we last spent Christmas Eve with just the two of us, huh?” She clearly didn’t hear her best friend. “What if you become mine and I’ll be yours like how we used to? Just for tonight.”
He frowned deeply. “Excuse me? And when exactly were I yours?”
“Awww, Yuuya-chan, don’t be shy. We were used to be this close,” she said as she hugged his right arm tightly, which Yuuya didn’t enjoy very much.
“Stop it. It’s disgusting to have a boy latching on my arm.”
He yelped for the second time when Kazumi flew an unexpected jab on his back.
“One BigMac and one large french fries,” the waitress repeated the menus Kazumi ordered. “Is there anything else, Miss?”
Kazumi nudged on Yuuya, who was still busy on deciding his order. “Can you just choose already!”
“Give me another minute. I’m still deciding. Ne, Kazumi, which one do you think is cooler? Reshiram or Zekrom?”
“When I said spending the Christmas Eve like how we used to doesn’t mean we also have to order Happy Meal.”
“It has nothing to do with our old-time ritual. I just want the toys.”
“That’s… so cute of you. Oh gosh, I can’t believe I myself have just said that.”
“One large french fries and one Happy Meal’s cheeseburger. And Zekrom!” he finally decided on his orders.
“You usually would order more than just a french fries and a burger.”
“Nah, I can pig out when we are back to your house.”
The waitress nodded. “So the orders are one BigMac, two large french fries, and one Happy Meal’s cheeseburger.”
“And Zekrom,” Yuuya added.
Kazumi pulled lightly on his jacket after the waitress told them the bill. “Ne, Yuuya. Since you’re the one who has the intention to go out, you have to pay for me.” She looked happy as she stated that.
He grimaced. “Actually, I want to borrow some money from you. I don’t bring any money with me right now. Not even a cent. Please, I’ll pay everything back by tomorrow!”
She gaped in disbelief. “Oh, no. Don’t tell me you’re not joking, because I don’t bring my wallet, too. I thought you had some!”
“I left my wallet in my house. And I thought you had some.”
“Sir, could you quickly pay the bill? There are people lining up behind you,” said the waitress who started to look annoyed.
Kazumi glanced at Yuuya and half-heartedly said, “Uh, I think we should cancel our orders.”
He nodded in understanding. “That’s okay. We don’t bring money to pay anywa-”
“Yuuyan and Kazumi-san?”
They turned their head at the same time to the person who called them from the next cash counter. When they recognized who it was, Yuuya spontaneously dashed to him and gave him a bear hug. “Yuuto-kun!” he cried in relief.
“What is this, Yuuyan? We’ve just met this afternoon and you already miss me this much?” Yuuto joked, but nevertheless he honestly confused by the elder boy’s sudden outburst.
“Yuuto-kun, we need your help!”
“What?”
“We have ordered some food but we don’t have money…”
“So, uh, we need you to pay all of these for us,” Kazumi finished, pointing to the foods on the counter. “Could you lend us some of your money, Yuuto-kun? Please?” She gave the tall boy her puppy-eyes.
Yuuto sweatdrooped at the bestfriends before him. “Sure.”
“We were lucky that Yuuto-kun was there!” Yuuya stated, then served himself a big bite of his cheeseburger.
“Yeah, and he was way too kind. He said we didn’t want us to pay him back. He’s such an angel.” Kazumi shook her head. “Yuuya, I think you should learn from that junior of yours.”
“Hey! I would treat you if only I brought my wallet-Kazumi?” He stopped on his track, realizing that she was left behind.
She stood still while staring at something accross the road. It was a giant christmas tree, surrounded by withered trees with beautiful illuminations wrapped their thin branches. Or was it the couple who he spotted had just kissed under the romantic lightning? Maybe both of them.
When he saw a streak of sadness appeared on her face, he knew he couldn’t let her stayed that way.
He approached her and looked at the christmas tree. “Am I not worth enough to be your company tonight?”
She turned her head. “Eh?”
“I’m your best friend, right? You should be happy because at least you can spend Christmas Eve and see the illumination together with me. Just forget about that walking stick for a while. I’m sure he wouldn’t mind.”
Albeit still a little bit sad, she smiled sincerely. “You are right. I’ll try.”
“I don’t like your answer.”
There was a silence for a moment. Kazumi glanced at Yuuya and turned her face right away as she felt warmth crept upon her cheeks. She couldn’t believe herself for thinking that the solemn expression of his made her heart skipped a beat.
Stupid best friend, she thought, and then smiled to herself. And I was stupid for having a crush on him back then.Back in fourteen years ago.
“Ne, Yuuya,” she started.
“Hmm?”
“I wish I could go back to when we were just seven years old.”
He raised his left eyebrow. “If you wish for something ridiculously impossible like that, don’t say that to me. It’s christmas, go tell Mr. San-”
She grabbed his arm and dragged him away. “What are we doing here? Let’s go!”
“Wait! Go to where?”
“To the playgorund of course! We are spending tonight just like Christmas Eve fourteen years ago, remember?”
He sighed and muttered something about God saving him from any possible danger caused by her mood swing. Nevertheless, he was glad to see his best friend seeming to start enjoying the night.
A/N: Cola. Mangoes fresh from the backyard. Mariah Carey. Bokeh. Galaxy Dome. Overused brain. NYC's Wonderful Cupid on piano. Running out of metallic blue nail polish. AND I’M DONE WITH THIS FIC! I honestly prefer to call it super-long drabble rather than a one-shot because... that's not the end, actaually. There's no specific ending.
The McD part wasn’t even necessary. I just want my ideal-person-to-spend-the-entire-holiday-with Yuuto to show up here in some way. And, yes, the Pokemons I mentioned above are really this month’s Japanese Happy Meals Toys along with other Pokemons like, of course, Pikachu. Though I doubt the real Takaki would order kiddies menu like Happy Meals but… who knows! I mean, hey, there’s nothing wrong with grown-ups ordering Happy Meals! I only want the toys it’s Puss In Boots series here in Indonesia!
Have a nice holiday, everyone! :)
