“Ryosuke, do you love me?”
The said young man blinked in surprise. His mouth slightly opened, at first wanting to ask why the sudden question. The answer came to him in a form of realization. He dismissed the thought.
“Of course I do.” He smiled. Soft. Warm. Assuring. “I always do.”
For a second, relief washed over her, before the sorrow came back and reigned her heart.
The words she wanted to say the most were stuck at the base of her throat. Purposely. It was for his sake. She shouldn’t utter them. And no tears were allowed to drop.
Grasping his hand tighter, she snuggled her head closer to his neck, her eyes were set on the velvety night sky.
It would be their last time watching over the moon together.
She savored every last second she was spending with him right now.
His touch. His warmth.
The silence.
The fresh fragrance of summer night.
She let everything go, floating between the endless river of stars.
She didn’t spot a single of his belongings in their room.
Ryosuke had left. Maybe for good.
She had let her guard down. They live in the orphanage. How could she completely forget the possibility of any of them getting adopted, taken away by strangers who wished for a child?
There were many other children in the facility, but after all these years, he was the only one she had.
In the end, no one could stay together forever.
Now she was all alone.
She had no clue of how she should continue living her days without him by her side.
Or. Maybe. She had one.
Her fingers traced the glass of a photo frame which had his photo inside.
She closed her eyes, remembering his voice from last night.
“Of course I do. I always do.”
She held the photo close to her heart.
“I love you.”
Just by having his love for her was enough. Right?
