Summary: Everybody knew that BEST members always did something fun whenever one of them was having birthday. Special for this year, Inoo could hog the cake for himself alone.
Heavy… It was so heavy… Not only his eyes which were already tired and stinging, he suddenly felt as if an invisible creature with an unbelievebale amount of mass jumping to his back. He was sure that something was there, but all he got when his hand reached his back was merely thin air. Still, he kept walking with his body leaned forward like a hunchback.
Continuously panting, he dragged his left foot for another step on the pitch black road between a pitch black wall under the pitch black sky. Or ceiling. That place was simply a pitch black world. Not completely dark because he could see himself and the worn-out t-shirt and training pants he wore to sleep. There might be various objects-camouflaged with the color black-or really nothing at all.
He groaned, complaining that he couldn’t walk anymore, hands on his trembling knees. Even opening his eyes became difficult as the sweats from his forehead dribbled over them.
With squinted eyes, he lifted up his face and… He squinted his eyes more, looking confused. There was a blinking white dot far before him. He was focusing on it that he didn’t notice it gradually getting brighter.
When he finally realized what was happening to his surrounding, his whole body was already swallowed in the blinding white. Murmurs of some incomprehensible language-and were there also tidbits of Japanese?-appeared from all direction. They were getting louder and rather unpleasant as the seconds passed…
“Good morning, how are you~? Good morning, how do you do~? I’m fine, hope you are too~! Good morning, how are you~?” He heard someone singing on top of his lungs. No, he couldn’t even categorize it as singing since it sounded more like wailing. And it hurt his head. It was throbbing inside.
Who was singing, he didn’t care. He only wished that whoever it was to shut his awful voice and stop slapping his cheek and shaking his body. He was too tired for these tortures.
“Oi, oi! Wake up! Wake up! Oi, sleepy head! Wake up!”
The slapping and shaking continued together with the very-familiar-sounding yells. Was it his mother or his sister? He couldn’t figure it out. But the females in Inoo household had never been this annoying and rough before.
Groaned, he turned his head so most part of his face was buried in the pillow-he was lying flat on his stomach-only to get a harsher shake from the side.
“Wake up! Oi, wake up! Geez, Yabu! He’s too stubborn! Can you do something about it?”
‘Yabu?’
The said name was like a bait to awareness. He wondered if he heard that name right.
“Inoo-chan? Inoo-chan? It’s morning. Wake up,” said a voice with gentler tone, which he recognized as Yabu’s and he couldn’t be wrong. It piqued his curiousity to find out what was actually happening in his bedroom.
With soft taps on his shoulders, he opened his eyes slightly, not used to the bright sunlight yet. He heard two people shouting “Finally!” when he tried to support his body with his elbows. He turned his head to the side. At first, his sight was still a blur of soft colors, then two faces he knew very well slowly appeared before him with those stupid toothy grins plastered on them. Hikaru and Daiki. There was also Yabu. His expression was normal, unlike the other two’s.
“Ehehehe. Good morning,” Hikaru greeted him using his annoying deep voice. A way Inoo thought was suspicious. Or maybe not. It was Hikaru, anyway.
“Guddo mooninggu, Inoo-chan!” Daiki beamed. His sudden Japlish was not something new. His weird grin was.
Just by looking at them, everyone could know that it must be those two who were responsible for the previous slapping, shaking, yelling, and horrible singing. However, he had a feeling that the strange happy looks they gave him right now weren’t for acting all innocent after assaulting him in his sleep.
Maybe they were just being weird.
“Eh… What time is it?” Inoo mumbled, hand searching for the alarm clock somewhere on his bed.
“7.32,” Yabu answered for him.
“7.32?”
Yabu nodded, and Inoo mentally cursed. Last night he was working on loads of school work and he barely finished them all at five in the morning. He had slept for two hours and a half only and these friends of his decided to come very early to bother him. And he had class at eleven. Great.
“What…” He hissed and then pressed his lips, holding back his annoyance. “What are you guys doing he-Eh?”
He tried to stir his body but something heavy held him back to do so. He looked through his shoulder and found a body bigger than his sprawling on his back. Noticing a messy mop of bronze hair, it must be none other than Takaki.
“So this is why it felt so heavy in my dream…” he groaned. “Get away from me, Takaki…”
“Oi, Takaki! Wake up! You can’t sleep!” Daiki slapped Takaki’s butt, earning a painful yelp from the older boy. Takaki didn’t get a chance to move as Daiki slipped his arms under Takaki and forced him to get up.
“Aaaaa… I need to sleep, too…” Takaki whined. Nonetheless, he stood up next to Daiki, ruffling the back of his head.
Hikaru chuckled. “At a moment, I really forgot that he is here with us. Hey, Takaki, I could have mistaken you as Inoo’s jumbo pillow. You looked like one!”
“Oi!”
After Inoo got to sit at the edge of the bed, he placed his hands on his knees, staring at his friends who were lining up in front of him one by one. “So what is it? Why are you, you, you, and you here?”
The four boys exchanged secretive look and knowing smile to each other before they were back to Inoo. Inoo raised his eyebrow at the long, colorful carton tubes Hikaru and Daiki pulled out from their back and aimed at him.
Suddenly, there was a loud popping sound along with splashes of gold and silver attacking his poor face.
“HAPPY BIRTHDAY, INOO-CHAN!”
Confetti was everywhere in the room. Some were scattered in the air and on the floor and bed, a few got stuck on Inoo’s bed hair. Inoo was dumbfounded. He still had a headache from lacking sleep, hence his mind couldn’t progress the situation well.
“Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday, happy birthday! Happy birthday to you~!” Everyone sang while clapping their hands, with Daiki blew the mini trumpet at the end.
“Guys…”
“Surprise!” Daiki shouted. “You don’t see it coming, do you? We have planned this since weeks ago!”
“That’s why we didn’t text you happy birthday last midnight. For this surprise!” Hikaru added.
“We bought a cake for you.” Yabu held out the cake box. “Let’s eat it together with your family downstairs.”
“Yea, breakfast~!” Takaki beamed, hands up high.
Everyone excitedly walked out from the room except for Inoo, who moved slower than the others. His head was heavy. He was still sleepy. So, when the four boys had passed the door frame, he reached the door knob and closed it from the inside.
The four boys stopped on their track as they heard a locking sound. They turned their heads to find Inoo nowhere with them.
“Wait-HEY!”
“Inoo-chan!”
There was another mechanical sound and Inoo opened the door.
“What was that, Inoo-chan? Was that your newest joke-”
Daiki didn’t finish his rambling as he saw the said boy ignored him and casually took the cake box from Yabu, making everyone speechless and confused.
“Thanks for coming, guys. And the cake. You guys are the best.” With a playful smile, Inoo shut the door and locked it once again. He plopped down on the bed, pulled the blanket to cover him up to his head and joyfully drifted back into slumber, ignoring the mess of confetti everywhere and the furious banging on the door.
