Susp's Review: GENERATIONS BACKSTOP

Aug 06, 2011 09:02

With his deadly horns, thick armour, massive strength, and champion wrestling skills, Backstop is ready and eager to lay the smackdown on some Decepticons.

Beast Mode: Backstop is an African white rhinoceros. From horn to tail tip, he measures 14 cm(5.5”) long and is greenish-grey, brown, and black with metallic grey horns, metallic silver accents, blue eyes and stripes, and a red Autobot symbol on his left side. His hide is a mixture of robotic parts and pebbled skin.

Of all the rhino TFs (there’s been a few!), Backstop is one of the most articulated. His head turns from side to side, his shoulders and hips are ball-jointed, and his knees and tail are hinged. Inserting his translucent blue and metallic silver Beast Planet key into the back of his head causes his horns to spring forward about 3 cm(1.2”). Gangway!

Transformation: Very easy. Unfold the right robot forearm from beneath the rhino head, unfold the left arm from the rear, slide down the limbs and snap them together, and flip up the robot head.

Robot Mode: Backstop stands only 9 cm(3.5”) tall, but is far wider and chunkier than your standard Scout. He definitely looks like he could take on far larger foes and win. His colour scheme is unchanged except for more black parts. His head is black with a metallic gold face and blue eyes. Despite his sharp fangs, he looks like an amicable ‘bot.

Backstop’s right arm is short and stumpy and ends in a normal hand while his left arm is longer and ends in an enormous three-clawed paw. His legs looks even more ridiculous due to their asymmetry. The left one in particular looks like it’s got a tumour growing on the thigh. Poseability is pretty minimal. Backstop’s right shoulder and hips rotate, his left shoulder has a universal joint, and his elbows are hinged. His horn gimmick still works in this mode, but it looks silly and pointless.

Overall, Susp Sez: Despite his flaws, I rather like Backstop. His robot mode is stricken by asymmetry and lack of articulation, but it’s definitely got personality to it. His rhino mode is one of the nicest I’ve ever seen and has a good gimmick. And finally, his new colour scheme is considerably more attractive than the Cybertron version’s. 4/5
