Susp's Review: ENERGON CRUELLOCK

Feb 23, 2009 06:54

Transformers: Energon took the Powerlinxing gimmick to a whole new level, giving us Autobots that could double up to form single robots with increased power. Also Decepticons with hyper-powered weapons. And finally, Omnicons and Terrorcons, small robots that could convert energon into weapons for themselves and their larger companions. Cruellock is the most powerful of the savage Terrorcons.

Beast Mode: Although billed as a raptor, Cruellock bears a strong resemblance to the giant mutant iguana from the ill-fated 1998 American Godzilla movie. His main colours are midnight green, jungle green, bone white, and dark grey. His energon star, claws, and the bottom half of his tail are translucent bright green. He has orange stripes and metallic silver, gold, purple, and blue-green accents. His narrow eyes are purple.

Cruellock measures roughly 18 cm(7.1”) long and has a maximum height of 12 cm(4.7”). His mouth opens slightly, his shoulders have ball and hinge joints, his elbows and hips are ball-jointed, his knees and ankles are hinged, and his tail sways from side to side. Removing his energon star reveals a metallic silver Decepticon spark beneath a transparent dome.

While it’s a pretty swell monster for the most part, Cruellock’s shoulders and hips aren’t all that stable due to his transformation.

Transformation: Split open Cruellock’s tail, remove the blade and the pistol, then close up the tail again. Rotate the white pieces of the hips down, then press the waist together, causing the reptile head to swing back. Finally, rotate the robot head around.

Robot Mode: Cruellock stands 10.5 cm(4.1”) tall at the head, 13 cm(5.1”) with the lizard head on his back. His head is jungle green with metallic silver eyes, a purple crest, and orange, fang-like projections. With his wide shoulders and sharp claws, he looks like a tough, vicious fighter. He retains all the limb articulation of his beast mode.

Cruellock’s weapons are a laser pistol and a large blade that peg into his fists. Each weapon features a Mini-Con-style socket to attach it to larger robots. The weapons can also combine to form an enormous sword that can be wielded by other Energon toys as well as Cruellock himself!

Overall, Susp Sez: With his cool beast and robot modes, good transformation, and nifty energon weapons, Cruellock is a solid addition to one’s collection. 8/10

Although the animation for Energon was a decided improvement from Armada, the pacing and plot continued to suffer flaws. More than making up for this, however, was the horde of impressive toys, from an Optimus Prime with multiple combined modes to a gigantic Megatron brimming with guns to Scramble City-style combiners to Omega Supreme himself! Then in 2005, almost all too quickly, Hasbro revamped the line again . . .
