Susp's Review: UNIVERSE ONSLAUGHT
Poor Onslaught. He's the leader of the Combaticons, yet Swindle's the most popular and Brawl landed the blockbuster movie role. But with a brand new Ultra-sized toy, this military mastermind is looking to carve out his own legacy at last.
Vehicle Mode: In G1, Onslaught turned into a flatbed anti-aircraft truck; now he's a 6x6 urban assault vehicle with a twin-barrelled turret. Measuring about 19 cm(7.5") long, he's mainly feldgrau(grey-green) with metallic olive armour plating, black wheels, translucent brown viewports, translucent orange headlights, taillights, sirens, and spotlight, silver guns and mine plough, and metallic silver front winch and rear vent. Printed on either side in white lettering is "S.W.A.T." and "MONZO 12782". The latter is a shout-out from Hasbro to my fellow fan and friend Matthew "Monzo" Karpowich, who knows more about Transformers than I ever will.
Onslaught has a ton of play value in this mode. His mine plough, which features black airbrushing, can be lowered to sweep for hidden explosives, or more likely to slice through Autobot ranks. The gun turret swings 90 degrees in either direction, and pressing down on the orange button activates flashing red LEDs and either a wailing siren or a machine gun sound. Pushing down on Onslaught as you roll him along your floor or desk activates a heavy duty engine sound.
Onslaught comes with a 9.5 cm(3.7") x 6 cm(2.4") riot shield, feldgrau with metallic olive vents and "S.W.A.T." printed on it. It also has that annoying electronics warning sticker that only Canadian products seem to be cursed with. The shield attaches on top of the turret in this mode. Although it doesn't impede the electronics, it does obscure a good bit of detail. Still, it probably does Onslaught's spark good knowing he's well protected against aerial attacks.
Transformation: Simpler than Powerglide. Remove the riot shield, detach the sides of the vehicle, flip out the legs, fold up the rear wheels inside the shins, and deploy the feet. Split apart the vehicle front, unfold the arms and fists, swing down the chest, and snap it into place.
Robot Mode: G1 Onslaught was a fairly imposing toy back in the day, but this new version puts him to shame. Standing almost 20 cm(7.9") tall at the head, 23.5 cm(9.3") including his twin guns, and with bulging limbs, shoulders, and chest, Universe Onslaught is one Decepticon you don't want to cross! He's considerably more colourful in this mode, with metallic silver shoulders, dark blue panels on his forearms and waist, orange panels on his abdomen, silver fists, and a large purple Decepticon symbol on his left shoulder. His head is black and metallic silver with a translucent brown visor and a tiny orange circle on his forehead. Pressing the button on his turret causes his visor to flash red as well as activate the same sounds from vehicle mode.
Onslaught's riot shield attaches somewhat loosely to a flip-up panel on his left forearm. Although he no longer has his trusty sonic stun gun, pressing a button on his right forearm deploys a large black cannon. He's a bit sturdier and more stable than Powerglide, though with less articulation. His head, upper arms, wrists, and thighs rotate, his shoulders and hips have ratcheting universal joints, and his elbows and knees are hinged.
Overall, Susp Sez: Onslaught is an excellent toy. Both vehicle and robot mode do a wonderful job of capturing the character's essence, and are loaded with great play value. Grab him when you find him. 9.5/10
