I finished Philosopher's Stone today. If I can get through Chamber of Secrets and Prisoner of Azkaban this week before I leave and finish Goblet of Fire during my stay at Clemson (a little over a hundred pages a week--no problem), I'll have just Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince to reread before Deathly Hallows comes out. I vote for writing out the maths characters in words rather than notation. Apart from word count, it'll make it more friendly to non-maths people, and if most maths fiction already does it in notation form then you might as well be difficult different. Names like e to the x would sound right at home in a ghetto novel.
