10 (Totally Random) Facts About Me

Nov 09, 2009 17:49

*Quick note: I was inspired to do this by another blogger. The list is supposed to be composed of facts that most of my friends don't know about me. And since I have no idea what to write about today, I figured I might as well to do this. Heck, why not.

1. I actually knew how to speak Chinese when I was 3 years old...and yep, pretty fluently. I was surprised too when I watched my family's home videos recording me when I was a toddler. I don't exactly know how I forgot it. But if I had to find an excuse for forgetting it, I would blame it on my dad. See, my dad's Vietnamese and my mom's Chinese. During the first three years of my life, my dad was mostly away. He was in the military at that time so he was called away pretty often. I lived with my mom and her family as a baby growing up in San Diego. They spoke mostly Chinese so I began to speak Chinese. When my mom finally thought enough was enough, she insisted that my dad stayed at home so that I can have a father. Of course, Dad didn't know any Chinese so my mom communicated in Vietnamese with him. We moved out of my mom's family's house when my father found a job in San Francisco. I gradually forgot Chinese while English became my dominant language, as well as some Vietnamese.

2. I grew up on macaroni and cheese. Throughout my life, my mom hates the idea of cooking for lunch. She doesn't mind cooking for dinner, but not so much for lunch. So she simply made some easy mac n cheese and let me eat them at least 3x a week as a kid or if she didn't feel like doing that either, she simply microwaved a TV dinner version of macaroni and cheese for me. You would think I'm sick of it but nope, even to this day I still enjoy macaroni and cheese at least once a week. The second thing I grew up on? Apple pie. Yeah, my mom's fault also.

3. My family is scattered. Nope, not just across the United States, but across the world as well. My grandma (dad's side) and my uncle and cousins live in Oregon. My other grandma (mom's side) lives in LA with my two aunts. I have more uncles and cousins in San Diego. And more still in Texas and New York. As well as in Australia. And Canada. And England and France. But partly because of that, we're not exactly a close-knit family. I'm not really close to most of my relatives except for a couple of them. We rarely see each other, if we do at all. In fact, I've never seen or met my relatives from Texas, New York, Canada, the UK, and France. I just know of their existence and they know of mines but other then that, we have little to do with each other.

4. Of all the things that gross me out, wet bread disgusts me the most. Yeah, I know it sounds weird but do you know how some people just can't stand the sight of certain types of food and it makes them want to vomit? Well, it's like that for me except the bread had to be completely soaked in water for me to find it disgusting. Just the sight of it is gross. That's probably why I can't stand eating certain types of bread, especially the ones that soak up your saliva within the second you put it in your mouth.

5. I can't learn Spanish for crap. Everyone says it's an easy language, that it's similar to English, that it's even easier then English. That might be true for native Spanish speakers or for people who have an uncanny ability in foreign languages but it's certainly not true for me. I took Spanish I, II, and III in high school and it's a miracle that I even passed the classes. I failed the majority of the tests (they're not even oral tests) and I completely struggled with the verb tenses. I had friends who were Spanish-speakers and they did try to help me out. Despite their efforts, a failed student is a failed student. I did great in every other subject; math, science, history, English, art, computer programming, accounting, etc...during high school. But the foreign language area on my grade transcript did kill my GPA quite a bit.

6. I've only been in 5 states in my entire lifetime; California (my home state), Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, and Hawaii. I hope to see more some day.

7. I'm a huge fan of fashion. I like to play with the pieces, see what goes well with what. I use myself as my model, since I'm slender enough and have the height to do so. I pretty much own every type of clothing out there--in other words, I'm not a "pants girl" or "skirts girl", etc...I wear anything that I think looks nice on me, be it tank-tops, mini skirts, shorts, flip-flops/sandals for the summer; denim jackets, leggings, tights, blouses, denim skirts, and flat shoes for the fall; leather jackets, skinny jeans, flared jeans, and boots for the winter; and various styles of short-sleeved shirts for spring. I have a lot more but that's all I can think of at this moment. And yes, I'm into high-heels too.

8. I have a large collection of Victoria's Secret's body sprays. I don't know why I keep buying them. I guess I just can't stand putting on the same fragrances every day.

9. And speaking of fragrances, my all-time favorite perfume is Britney Spears' Midnight Fantasy. I fell in love with it the first time I smelled it.

10. I admit to liking techno and electronica. I come off to most of my friends as someone who only listens to rock music, such as alternative, punk, and indie. And true, 98.5% of the time you see me with my earphones on, I'm listening to some form of rock music. But I actually enjoy techno once in a blue moon. I find it fun and futuristic.
