Title: Five Moments
Author:
paiger1218Rating: PG-ish
Timeline: Well, according to the ages of the Reynolds children, Alley is 9, and Matthew is 5, which makes Zoë 45.
Characters: Zoë/Ethan Centric, babyfic!, Sadie
Author’s Note: Zoë and Ethan are married, which hasn’t been written yet, but I’m assuming they get married, so yeah, I’ve jumped ahead to after their marriage. I’m going on the idea that Zoë is 42-ish when she marries Ethan, which makes Alley Reynolds 6 and Matthew Reynolds 2 when she marries, for timeline purposes.
Disclaimer: All peeps from the Firefly tv show ain't mine. Just borrowing. Ethan and Sadie belong to Sushi!Ville, but I didn't create those either. The Morrell babies, however, have been in my brain way too long, so here they are, finally making their debut!

Surprise!
It was a shocking surprise, the day Zoë found out she was pregnant. She and Ethan had discussed it long before they were married, of course, but time was passing them both by and it just never seemed to happen.
Until that day when Zoë went to Simon for what she thought was the flu and he said it would be gone in nine months. It didn’t hit her at first, what he’d meant by that statement. It didn’t hit her when he showed her the test results.
It did, however, make an impact of sorts when Simon did the sonogram and showed Zoë the screen. It truly hit her when he handed her the sonogram pictures he’d printed out and she saw two tiny blobs with two tiny heads.
Two. Zoë was pregnant with twins.
Ethan found out about them when Simon sent Kaylee to fetch him after Zoë fainted.

In the interim…
Ethan was a proud father, beaming at everyone he saw in the days of Zoë’s pregnancy. It did, however, take some time for his daughter to come around, after all, she had only just gotten accustomed to having Zoë as her new mother, but once the girl saw photographs of the ultrasounds that finally resembled two babies, you’d have thought Christmas came early.
Zoë remained strangely calm, though the first few days after discovering her pregnancy had been fraught with concern. She felt, at forty-five years of age, that pregnancy was too late for her, though Simon explained a number of women older than Zoë gave birth to perfectly healthy babies every year. He did, however, explain that twins were more common in older mothers.
Ethan, Zoë, and Sadie, painted the twins’ bedroom, choosing to surround the room in a baby blue with clouds cascading the walls. While Zoë and Ethan had decided not to find out the gender of their twins, they both felt they were destined for boys.

Birthday.
Zoë wondered whose idea of a sick joke this was, giving birth. The pain was worse than when she’d been in the war, and she was crankier than she’d ever been.
Ethan got the brunt of it with every contraction, and Zoë made sure he never forgot how she’d gotten this way.
Ethan figured it would get better once the first baby was out, and it did, briefly, until both Zoë and Ethan remembered they were having two.
For five whole minutes, Zoë was calm as she stared down at the face of hers and Ethan’s son whom they immediately named Nathaniel Hoban Morrell. Kaylee whisked the baby away when Simon reminded everyone that they weren’t done yet, and Zoë got cranky again.
Ethan simply held her hand, never wincing when she squeezed the life out of it. And he told her he loved her over and over again, even when Zoë screamed obscenities in his direction as Simon worked on getting their second child delivered. Zoë cried when Kaylee showed her and Ethan their other son, whom both parents named Zackary Ethan Morrell.
Later, with Nate and Zack lying on the bed asleep, Zoë pulled Ethan to her, tears in her eyes, and said gratefully, “I love you too.”
As Ethan smiled back at her and lifted his sons into his arms, Zoë added “…but we’re never doing this again,” and Ethan laughed.

Nate and Zack
It was amazing to Zoë how long she could sit in one place and just stare at the two lives she and Ethan had created. She’d been so used to constantly moving, doing the job, collapsing only when there was time.
And now, there were her boys. Zoë had, some time before, resigned to vicariously live through Mal and Inara and fulfill her motherly urges with their two children. When Ethan came along, she worked hard to bond with Sadie, whom she adored.
But now she had Nate and Zack. Secretly, when she had imagined a life with children, she had always wanted boys, and she got her wish, twofold.
She drank in the sight of them; Nate with his very Zoë-like seriousness, even at six months old; Zack with his infectious grin that made Zoë think both of Ethan and Wash. She laughed to herself, imagining the boys in a few years time. They’d be mischievous if they were anything like their parents.
Zoë soon could not remember a moment in her life without Ethan, Sadie, and the boys. It was nice to stand still every now and then.

Wash’s Dinosaurs
It was the day that the boys found Wash’s dinosaurs that Ethan and Zoë decided the best way they could explain the stories they didn’t understand when the entire crew got together. Wash became the boys’ bedtime story hero as he battled such mythic creatures such as the Medusa who always seemed to have red hair; the evil torturer who was never without his wire-rimmed glasses; and of course, when the boys were older, the Reavers.
The dinosaurs remained in the boys’ room well into their young adult lives, and then some, even after they knew every story behind each dinosaur.
