It was interesting how some things just worked out. The rocking chair that Jayne made for Mal and Inara nearly fifteen years ago now sat in a brand new nursery, newly re-finished and ready for use. It struck Jayne how things had changed; how he had changed. Here he was, married and somebody’s daddy. He barely remembered himself as a mercenary and a gun-toting thief. Well, at least the thieving had changed, though he had a very secure and very private room triple locked where all his guns lay, though dustier, since Jayne had gotten married.

He’d met Adelle one day in Paraiso, and everything about Jayne before had ended, though it was arguable that Mal and Inara getting pregnant shattered Jayne’s status as mercenary irrevocably. Still, Adelle had swept him off his feet and damn near threw him on his muscular buttocks. She was beautiful, yes, and young, and all those wonderful things. But it was her spirit that attracted Jayne the most. She was a spitfire, but with Jayne, she was all things soft. She had lost everything in a Reaver attack: parents, brother, husband, and baby son. But somehow she’d survived and was able to stay optimistic about life. And she’d fallen hard for Jayne.

At first, Adelle acted shy around Jayne before ignoring him all together. But Jayne straightened up, acted the gentleman, and made Adelle laugh for he first time in ages. Six months later, they were married.

Alley announced she was running away, and Jayne was the one who put her plans on hold. Jayne wondered how he’d gotten himself wrapped around that girl’s finger so well.

And it was then that he told himself he was never going to be a mercenary again. He packed his guns away and put money down for land to build a house.

So Jayne got married. Alley had been Maid of Honor; Gus the Best Man.

The honeymoon was on Serenity, and when Jayne and Adelle came back, they were pregnant.

Adriana Janelle Cobb was born nine months and three days later. That was two days ago. Addie, they called her. She had Adelle’s blonde hair and Jayne’s eyes. And Jayne was now wrapped around her little finger. He had never known such love, and yet, he almost wondered if he was worthy of all this.

Adelle had caught him, the first night. He had been leaning over his baby daughter’s crib, looking down at her, and telling her he didn’t deserve her. Adelle had sat Jayne down and put him in his place.

“Put the past where it belongs,” she’d said sternly. “And keep it there,” she added, stroking Jayne’s weary face. She pulled his face to hers, and kissed him then.

Jayne smiled, thinking back on that day and walked over to his daughter’s crib, looking in on her.
“Love ya, sweet pea,” he said, stroking his daughter’s baby hair.

He turned to see Adelle looking at him, love in her eyes.

“You keep this up, and she’s gonna be sleepin’ in bed with us forever,” Adelle quipped.

“Can’t help it none. I still can’t believe this whole thing is real,” Jayne admitted, pulling Adelle in his arms.

“Oh believe it, Jayne, ‘cause before you know it, she’s gonna be datin’” Adelle said menacingly.

“My muscular buttocks she is!” Jayne replied, giving his wife a playful swat on the behind.

“Mmm, keep that up, and…” Adelle said quietly, kissing Jayne.

“Woah, keep that up an’ what?” Jayne said.

Adelle looked up at him naughtily.

“And you’ll forget to feed the fish,” she said dryly, indicating a very hungry looking goldfish who had been a gift from Alley a day or two before Adriana was born.

Adelle walked out of the room, Jayne watching her.

“Tease!” he said.

She turned and looked at him, smiling.

“Hurry up and feed that gorram fish!” she replied huskily.

Jayne laughed and made quick work of feeding Shrimp (whose name was bestowed upon him by Gus of course).

He turned and looked in on his daughter, taking in the sight of her again before heading off to his and Adelle’s bedroom.

Jayne, the mercenary, was no more he thought.

And then he smiled.
