Chapter 2 ~~~~
Coffee. It all started with a simple cup of coffee.
Hyun Joong walked into the coffee shop just as it was opening. In the line, people were gossiping, whispering about a shooting that had happened outside the shop yesterday afternoon and one of the victims had apparently gone missing. Hyun Joong kept an emotionless stare, he knew the incident oh too well, he had been responsible for one of the shootings, and the reason why the girl was missing. He knew he hadn’t killed the target, but the other shooter had thrown him off, so he took the hostage and fled the scene. The woman currently residing in the spare bedroom, was wounded, shot in the shoulder by the mystery shooter. Hyun Joong sighed as he went up to the cashier, the woman had a latte when she was shot, so that is what she must like.
“Regular latte please” he said stoically.
The cashier looked up, and was stunned by the hunk in front of her. The barista had to walk over, and take his money for the latte, while the girl was in shock. He walked back over to his machines and started brewing.
“Sorry about her, she has a weakness for….” his voice trailed off.
“I understand” Hyun Joong said emotionlessly as a sigh escaped his mouth.
“This is the first time I have seen you in here” the barista said with an interested tone.
“I am getting a latte for my friend”
“Oh? That is very kind of you. Why didn’t you get one for you though?”
“I have never had one…”
“Coffee is good for the soul. Someone people claim it as fuel for their life. It’s a lot less complicated than most things.”
“It’s just coffee…”
“Then why are you here getting it for your friend?” the barista said as he smirked.
Hyun Joong was slightly stumped at the question, he had hostages before, but never treated them like this. He looked up at the barista holding out the cup to him smiling sweetly. He took the cup and turned around, and headed back to his apartment, deep in thought.
As the barista watched Hyun Joong leave his cell phone rang. He looked down at the number and frowned. He looked over at the other barista and told him he would just be a minute.
“Yoboseyo?” he said with a grim tone.
“Hyung Jun… you have a mission”
~~~~~
“The target is still living. You are supposed to be this great hitman, you need to get your act together, or the boss is going to come after you. He isn’t very forgiving.” The voice sneered, coming out of Hyun Joong’s cellphone.
“I understand, he will be terminated before the end of the week.” He replied coldly.
The line went dead. There was crashing going on in the next room. Hyun Joong, just listened the sounds of angry screaming coming from his guest room, that wasn’t the most submissive hostage in the world. His “requests” had come to a screeching halt, the oddly scarred mafia boss was probably the cause of it. The crashing and screaming had stopped. Hyun Joong got up, and slowly unlocked and opened the door to the guest room. The hostage was on the bed facing away from him, sleeping. He sighed, the plate of food he had left was in scraps on the floor, and oddly the only thing she had was the latte. Maybe there was something to that coffee nonsense the barista was mumbling. He cleaned up the mess and left the room.
“What do you mean our informant got shot?!” the chief yelled out.
Everyone in the office stopped what they were doing and looked into the main office. The messenger was putting his hands up to say “don’t shoot the messenger.”
“We promised him protection, and as soon as he leaves our office, he gets shot. Great job.” The chief bellowed.
“Ch-chief we didn’t know he would hire a hitman, really!” the messenger stammered.
“You do realize that he was the only informant we had related to the scarred madman correct?” the chief said sternly as he rubbed his temple. The messenger slowly backed out of the room, when the chief was waving him away.
“Siwon!” the chief called out.
A tall muscular man stood up from his corner desk and weaved around the cubicles to the chief’s office.
“Please grace me with some good news please.” The chief said desperately.
“Sir, I may have a lead. I have a possible location for the next attack. I will be out on the streets tonight” Siwon reported.
“Ah perfect. See? This is a fine example of an agent. Be careful” the chief praised.
Siwon nodded and left without another word. It had only been a couple says since he was reassigned to this case. Somehow people were dying without evidence, and all that remained in the crime scene was a lotus medallion. Also these “people” were high ranking mafia members, but vigilante justice never had a good ending, no matter how well the comic books dressed it up. This case was titled “Catching Smoke” for a reason. The last agent on the case suffered a disabling wound, and only said one thing before he sunk into a coma.
“There is a difference between a hitman and an assassin…”
Those words had buzzed in his brain since, weren’t they the same thing? Whatever name you slap on it, at the end of the day someone is dead right? Questions were ratting around in his skull still as he returned to his little office with his partner, Kyuhyun. As Siwon entered the office, his partner looked up from his laptop, with a questioning look.
“Oh he wanted to know if we had made any progress.” Siwon said casually.
“Well from you doing field work, we have a small notice on what the enemy will do next. But what I am wondering is how they do it without leaving anything. I mean we dusted for prints, sent object after object back to the lab, and even collected some of the dust in the crime scene, nothing. It’s like they are ghosts or something.” Kyuhyun said with a stoic tone.
Siwon sighed heavily and sat down in his chair. Half a day left before he took to the streets and tried to catch smoke with his bare hands….
After his shift was finally over, Hyung Jun traveled over to the hospital. He entered the hospital room, and saw his friend shifting his eyes all around the room. He sat on the edge of the hospital bed smiling down at the patient.
“How are you doing Jung Min?” Hyung Jun said in a positive tone.
Jung Min brought up his hand and flicked Hyung Jun’s forehead.
“I just got shot, how do you think I feel?” Jung Min said in a slightly cranky tone.
“Why do you always have to hit me? Wanna make me cry?” Hyung Jun said in an overly sweet tone.
“Oh drop the act. Seriously your cuteness is making me sick again” Jung Min said as he stuck out his tongue.
“What do you expect me to be a cold hearted assassin all the time? Let me tell you, been there, done that. I like to lead my life with some sense of normalcy during the day, Thank you” He proclaimed as he stuck out his tongue in retaliation.
“Yes you are entitled to that little bit. Ugh, hurry Junnie, the pain meds are starting to wear off He groaned.
“Araso. Master just wanted you to know, you will always be a pact brother of the Hēi liánhuā, and be careful. We always appreciate you covering up for us and safe guarding our secret” Jung Min turned to look at Hyung Jun but he was gone already. JungMin just chuckled when the nurse came in to administer his next dose of painkillers.
~~~
Hyung Jun wandered over to a local bookstore, and entered. The place was dead around this time, so he often came and visited.
“Gege!” (A/N: Chinese equivalent of hyung)
“HengJun!” a muffled reply sounded. (A/N: This is Hyung Jun’s chinese name)
“Where are you?” Hyung Jun yelled out.
He heard some rustling and out of the back room popped a slender man with raven hair.
“Organizing the books in the back room is harder than it sounds” he said panting.
Hyung Jun chuckled a bit and embraced the man warmly.
“Hangeng gege, how are you today?” Hyung Jun asked cutely.
“Oh same old same old, how is my HengJun today?” Hangeng asked while ruffling his hair.
“I went and saw JungMin in the hospital today. He woke up and is doing a lot better. Then I gave him master’s message.” Hyung Jun said seriously.
“Oh. Good. I still can’t believe he got shot, do they know who shot his girlfriend yet? That is what really puzzled me” Hangeng said thoughtfully.
“Nope. The shot didn’t come from the hitman who was after Jung Min though, it came from a different direction. At least that’s what my sources tell me” Hyung Jun said as he leaned up again the counter.
Hangeng looked out the window and saw the rain coming down. He put his hand up against the glass.
“You know what rain always reminds me of?” Hangeng said slowly.
“That day?”Hyung Jun said thoughtfully.
“That’s right. The day I met you, and became your blood brother” Hangeng said lost in his memories.
“Gege that’s not a terribly fun memory. Remember master had us fight eachother? Claiming that in order to be blood brothers, we had to spill a little of eachother’s blood. I thought you were really going to kill me” Hyung Jun said with fake hurt in his voice.
“It’s funny because I remember it being exactly the opposite. I thought I was going to die. We are pretty evenly matched” Hangeng said then chuckled a bit.
“Do you ever miss China? I do sometimes, our lives were simpler there…” Hyung Jun’s voice trailed off.
“Hengjun, there is a reason for everything. Remember that day we took an oath. We right wrongs in the world, under the cover of darkness. Our job was done in Beijing, so we had to move on. It’s all a part of life” Hangeng comforted him.
“Oh we have a mission tonight” he added.
“Yep Mi called me when I was at work this morning. Do we have the specifics yet?” Hyung Jun inquired.
“Yes I got them about an hour ago. We are after a mafia boss today. He is a rapist, serial murder and launders money” Hangeng recited from the papers he was holding.
“So basically your standard mafia boss” Hyung Jun said lightly.
Hangeng chuckled.
“Okay time to close up shop, we have a mafia boss to see”
~~~
Siwon was just driving up to the common crime hangout, when he got out of the car and saw the supposed hit for tonight.
He had his ear bud in, Kyuhyun at the opposite end giving him instructions and such. He was ready for the infiltration. He entered the club, it was a standard bar and loud music kind of place. But there were cheap hookers, and dancers everywhere. Siwon suddenly wished he wasn’t so appealing to the female gender. Within seconds he was swarmed with several women bumping and grinding against him. He slowly escaped the horde, and sat down in a seat in the corner, waiting for the strike.
~~~
The sun was setting slowly, the sky lighting up in bright orange colors mixed with some yellows and pinks. Hyung Jun and Hangeng were perched on top of a building, and surveying the area. Their outfits were stereotypical ninja looking outfits complete with various weapons attached to them.
“Well here we go again, to taint our souls in the name of purity for the human race” Hyung Jun mumbled.
Hangeng just chuckled.
“That’s what assassin’s do. You know the difference between us and hitmen? The motivation to kills, they do it for money, but we serve a higher purpose.” Hangeng said slowly.
“Gege, you sound like a fortune cookie” Hyung Jun said.
“Says the person that just said ‘taint our souls in the name of purity’ ” Hangeng said while rolling his eyes.
“ready?” Hyung Jun asked.
“You know it” Hangeng replied.
They jumped down, into the alley into the cover of darkness….
