73. Master and Commander, by Patrick O'Brian. 412 pages. (1970)
Grade: B
This is the first volume in the Aubrey-Maturin nautical series. It is (I think) 1800, and Jack Aubrey is promoted from Lieutenant to Captain and Commander of H.M.S. Sophie. His ship needs a surgeon, and none is available. His new friend, Stephen Maturin, however, is a doctor, and he agrees to take on the job. Their adventures cover most of the waters of the Mediterranean sea, in search of "prizes" and the French or Spanish fleets.
I liked it, but wouldn't go out of my way to find the next volume in the series, I think. I can see why many others are so fond of it, however.
