If you want my advice, (and I know that you don't) never buy a 400 year old cottage that needs renovation.
If you do, never, ever buy the one next door that also needs doing up.
I'm absolutely doing something I hate, which is scrubbing off the layer of plaster that the builder smeared all over the ceiling beams. The only thing that works is a toothbrush and nail brush. The room is 20' x 25' and that involves a lot of beams which is why it has been left all this time.
Even after I have cleaned the beams I will have to go over them all with button polish and then again and again with about 4 or 5 layers of wax.
All this before even starting to sand, seal and paint the walls and window frames.
Oh, I know. I'll be as proud as Punch when it is done.
