I had a very peaceful 3 days off work over the weekend. Saturday was spent shopping. We got lots of new clothes from Matalan. Matalan is a place where jeans sell for £10 and tee shirts are 2 for £3. So money goes a long a long way for perfectly good stuff.
Sunday was spent going through our drawers and wardrobes. We were ruthless in discarding all those items that no longer fit or are simply worn out. We have lots of room now for the new stuff.
Monday was spent gardening. At first, I thought I would tackle the lawn. Lawn! LOL. I didn't mow it at all last year because the builder was using it as a sort of holding area for all his stuff. So, it is now full of dried long yellow grass and thick new growth of meadow grass. The sheep have been in via the broken fence but not had much chance to eat it short. I started by lifting the left overs of the builder. We kept on hearing a concerned sort of buzzing. After some time I unearthed a bees nest. In the ground under the dried grass, with an angry bumble bee defending it.
After beating a hasty retreat and researching bees nests on the internet, I have decided to leave it well enough alone. Bumble bees are growing scarce and they only nest for a few weeks so the grass can wait.
I went to trim the roses and clip my new hedge on the orchard. While I was happily clipping away (I love hedge shears) I suddenly got pelted with heavy rain. It was sudden too. One minute I was warm and happy in the sun, next minute a downpour. It soon blew over enough for me to finish the job then a thunder storm rolled in. Guess what happened next?!!
That's right, a tornado. Would you credit it? A tornado! Obviously a weak and insipid thing compared to the murderous American monsters, but pretty startling in this neck of the woods.
My little hamlet escaped, it blew over and trashed the next valley and the nearest village.
Tonight I just got home from work to find 3" of silty water in my dining room, utility room and kitchen. I have rung the loss assessor who advised me to grit my teeth and clean it up after taking photos. As this is the third time we have had flooding after freak weather I might struggle to keep insured. I should save any further claim for 'a big one'. So now I'm about to find my spade to shovel the mud up before I can start mopping the water.
I wish this sort of thing would stop happening to me, I'm too busy to stop and deal with it. This old house has been flooded three times and struck by lightening.
Tornados are just too much - even if it is a Bank Holiday weekend!
