“You’re late, Miss Pevensie,” the stuffy old professor announced in dismay and disappointment that his star student should have such a mar on her record.

The mentioned student flushed from her spot in the doorway and lowered her head when skidding her way to her seat behind Caspian, who shot her a look as she passed by.

She gracefully sat herself down and looked about to her classmates to see what page of the book they were on. Professor Cornelius continued with his lecture and she found the page as quietly as she could. Susan tried to catch on to what he was going on about and gave a groan of frustration when she realized that she had forgotten the stargazing assignment that was due.

Susan grasped her head on each side and tried to fight away the ensuing headache from the wretched morning she was having.

I’m sorry, Professor. My mother had me watching my younger siblings all night and they are quite horribly behaved. She’s even considered boarding school.

I’m sorry, Professor. Our dog ate the assignment and I hadn’t anyone else to ask.

I’m sorry, Professor. I was transported to another world via phone booth and didn’t get back ‘til late.

All these excuses ran through her mind but there were noticeable errors in each of them. For one, Professor Cornelius had Edmund in his third form class and knows he’s a brilliant student and only got into trouble with the influence of their brother, Peter. For another, they didn’t have a dog, though Lucy’s begged for a kitten at one point. And for the last, it was just a wretched excuse all around.

She jumped a bit when she heard the harsh whisper of her name and looked up to see Caspian trying to look inconspicuous in speaking with her. She frowned at him.

“What?”

“You look lovely,” he teased.

She scowled even more, “I’m having such a dreadful morning and it’s all your fault!” She accused as quietly as possible.

“You were the one to invite me over last night,” Caspian said easily.

“You asked me to help you prepare for the Humanities exam!” She was almost red in the face, “But instead of focusing on that, you kept getting annoyingly off-task and even went off to gallivant with Peter! In the end, it was far too late to get anything done!”

“That was a very good cricket game,” he reminisced.

“Caspian!”

“Miss Pevensie!” Professor Cornelius called from the front.

Susan flushed as Caspian discreetly righted himself.

“If you are quite done,” the professor reprimanded.

She nodded and slumped in her seat at the chuckles off her classmates. She stuffed her head into her book for the rest of the hour only half listening to what Cornelius was lecturing about and in the end she decided she needed to ask for someone’s notes and was certainly not going to ask Caspian.

Soon, she occupied herself with just reading the chapter and she only had the vague idea about the North Star and it’s placement in relation to the other constellations and the involvement of mathematical equations to estimate its distance from each neighbor star. Next, the chapter went onto introducing the mathematics to calculating the position of the moon and that was when she heard the bustling about her as class ended.

“Miss Pevensie, I’d like to see you for a moment.” She caught Cornelius say and groaned again. Susan closed her book and Caspian caught her attention as he dipped his head in the small space between her desk and her head.

“For someone so smart, you ought to have caught on to the fact that by dawdling around during our session, the preparing would require more sessions.” He gave her a dazzling smile and wink. “The exam isn’t for another week.”

Her cheeks colored and she didn’t have any words forming in her thoughts. She was even more befuddled when Caspian leaned in to give her a cursory peck on the cheek before whisking off to his mathematics class.

It took some moments for Susan gather her wits together before preparing herself for the professor’s personal lecture on the values of being on time and most likely the prudence of keeping up with her schoolwork.

At this point, she doesn’t quite care anymore. She imagines she’ll be seeing stars for quite some time.
